Huge Thank-You and Hard Drive Question
« on: September 02, 2008, 11:33:33 PM »
My sincere thanks to everyone who has made 'Rockbox' a reality!  I used to carry four boxes of CD's in my truck.  Discovering Rockbox was so exciting that it prompted me to 'rip' those CD's to FLAC and buy three iRiver players.  Rockbox is really fantastic!  A BIG 'thank-you' to the team!

Question: Will the Toshiba 100 gig MK1011GAH  or 120gig MK1214GAH install and run Rockbox sucessfully in my iRiver h340 (with the proper zif adaptor)?

I've read everything searchable on hard-drive upgrades and take it that the 80gig toshiba mk8007gah with its' 50 pin adaptor will run Rockbox successfully in my h340.  Based on other posts (and on the drive specifications) it seems that the larger MK1011GAH and MK1214GAH 'should' run with the right ZIF adaptor.

I'd like to try this if it's feasible.  I take it that this is the proper adapter http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10887

Can anyone confirm or comment on this?  Have I read correctly?  I'd like to try a 100gig or larger drive, but if that's not possible, I'll go with the MK8007GAH.

I appreciate the help and again, 'thank-you' to everyone who has created Rockbox! :)

I have the Toshiba MK1011GAH in my iriver H140 with the ES&S Kabel adapter and it works just fine.

Would a modification to the iriver variants of Rockbox be required (like the Archos units did with the 'BigDisk' page describing it) once HDDs with capacities above 128 GiB (~137 GB) become available or more common?

Well, you will have to compile Rockbox with LBA48 support, but that is trivial. We might even be able to autodetect it in the future. You won't need to modify the hardware, since the USB-ATA bridge already supports ATA-6.

Linus, thank-you.  That's a wonderful setup you have with the mk1011gah!

The 100gig mk1011gah drives are available at pretty good prices, but I'd still like to try the 120gig mk1214gah.

Unless I'm missing something, I can't see any reason the mk1214 wouldn't install just as easily.  Would you agree?

I appreciate your help!

I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work. The Toshiba site is a little vague about the connector type, though...

I have a MK1214GAH in my gigabeat S, and can confirm it is ZIF type (which Toshiba call LIF).

Linus and Big Bambi,

Thanks for the follow-up!  I'm going to order the mk1214gah today and give it a try.  I'm going to need more space since:

A friend gave me a pile of jazz tapes and while Coleman Hawkins is 'ripping it up' on 'Body & Soul' -- I'm 'ripping' Coleman to hard disk! :-)

The Kabel adaptor doesn't seem to be available through an English language vendor, so I'll re-read the threads to see what other adaptors might work.

I'll report back on my progress.  Thanks again for the help!

Piscator

P.S. Afternoon Update: I ordered the 'DealXtreme' adaptor.

'Shopping' for the  Toshiba mk1214gah -- I discovered the Samsung HS161JB/A -- 160gig for less $ than some mk1214gah listings.

http://www.memory4less.net/hs161jb-a.html

Linus, I saw your 2007 notes regarding the unavailability of 160gig drives for iRiver players, but in case you haven't seen this "A" designated Samsung with 'ZIF' connector, here's the link:

TX again, piscator
