iPod 5.5 80GB, disk spinup??
« on: September 04, 2008, 09:02:30 AM »
I've noticed when dircache is enabled and I resume playback the disk spins for about 5 minutes whereas if I turn that function off disk spinup is dramatically reduced. It's a saved playlist. AdmittedI thought rockbox cached the file and folder tree to memory only once? Is playback queer to you?

It has to scan on startup to see if anything has changed since last startup.  Rockbox has no way of knowing if you added or deleted anything from the Apple USB modes.

After the first time, it does it in the background.

I appreciate the need to scan on startup to gather info on folders and files. I just don't understand why it gets weird when I resume playback. I'm resuming a big saved playlist of 17500 tracks -ish. It is WAY slower when using Foobar. I'm a windows sucker right now!

Are you trying to compare Rockbox running on a very very slow DAP to foobar running on a very very fast PC?  I assuming you mean than not when).  If you are saying foobar is slower, it still isn't a comparison you can make, and furthermore I don't believe it.

Also, are you saying that dircache makes a difference to resuming speed once everything has booted, and all disk activity has stopped?

No. Sorry I shouldn't have mentioned Foobar. Basically when I resume playback (of same playlist,) the disk spins up for about 5 minutes if dircache is enabled but only for a minute or less if it's turned off. I leave it off now but I wondered if there is a reason for this?

As I said in my previous post, are you saying that dircache makes a difference to resuming speed once everything has booted, and all disk activity has stopped?

It seems to, yes.

EDIT: just to clarify, resuming playback speed is just the same once everything has booted. it's just that the disk stays spinning for much longer (on resume) when dircache is enabled.

It sounds like the dircache update and buffering actions are competing for the hard drive and both are losing.
I thought this was a squashed bug.  Perhaps it has come back.
The 80GB 5th gen has long had disk performance issues above and beyond the other iPods.
The workaround is clearly to disable resume playback on boot.

(Sorry, not much help, thinking out loud.)

Makes sense. Thanks for the replies. (ps I don't have resume playback on boot enabled)

EDIT: Just wanna put my love for Aventinus (dark, strong Hefeweizen, Dunkel I guess) and Leffe out there! I noticed some of the devs are beer fans
