Menu Interface idea

Hi, I have an idea for Rockbox!

It deals with the menu interface.

I had the idea to make an option under settings to make it an "Array" sort of thing, like the menu on this phone:

Now one big thing would be the ability to use the scrollwheel on the sansa e200's to scroll to the bottom of a column and then to the top of the next one, so that way you wouldn't have to use the left/right buttons, but could just use the wheel, which is about my only problem with rockbox; some things (text editor) don't support the wheel completely, only for down.

Yes, this has been thought of quite a few times. There even was a patch for it back in the Archos Recorder days. I still like the idea, but it needs some consideration with respect to blind navigation and the voice interface. Not to mention that we need all these icons of different sizes for all targets...

I've been wanting to code something like that for a few months now. IMO it's a must-have for touchscreen targets, and it's nice to have as an option for the other ones.

I agree with NicolasP on the touchscreen targets. The icon-based root menu would work much better for those targets (currently Cowon D2 and m:robe 500), but on some targets with higher resolutions (iPod video, Gigabeat), it would make for a much more pleasing interface.
