Boot Error??
« on: September 01, 2008, 10:08:11 AM »
Hi everyone!
I just attempted to install Rockbox on my Ipod Nano 1g First generation.  :)
Unfortunatly, I'm not the best at computers and I got an error on my screen when my Ipod's first booted up saying:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: 2.0
Ipod version: 0x000C0006
SST55LD019k-45-C-MWE
Partition 1: 0x0B 898 MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to
reboot then SELECT+PLAY
for disk mode

I tried holding MENU+SELECT, and it rebooted it as it says, but then the error pops up again!
I also held SELECT+PLAY, but that didn't do anything.

Anyone know what to do?  ???

Thanks,
Comedycrazy6  8)

You need to hold select + play immediately after you have rebooted it with menu + select - this will force it into disk mode.

The problem you are seeing is because a Rockbox build has not properly been extracted to the disk - try using Rockbox Utility (linked from the manual) to do the install.

Thank you for the help.
I tried rebooting the system and then I held SELECT+PLAY. It then told me Ok to disconnect, and then froze. I tried extracting the file through the web manual, and hit "Complete install" and at the end of the download, it said "Failed to install bootloader".. so i tried the "Small Install" and the same thing happened.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

You first need to get it into disk mode and successfully connected to your PC.  I don't actually have an iPod, so I'm not really aware of any quirks I'm afraid - all I can say is that menu + select then menu + play should work.

After that, since you already have the bootloader installed, all you should need is the Install Rockbox option on the Installation tab.

Ok, when I hit the installation tab, I have the choice of either installing the bootloader, and or installing rockbox on my audio device. I must install the bootloader first.. but it says "Failed to add bootloader"..

Thanks,
Comedycrazy6

P.S.
I also went to this download link http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/win32/ipodpatcher.exe

to install the bootloader.. It works.. but the error appears from my very first post:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: 2.0
Ipod version: 0x000C0006
SST55LD019k-45-C-MWE
Partition 1: 0x0B 898 MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:

Hold MENU+SELECT to
reboot then SELECT+PLAY
for disk mode

You already have the bootloader installed, that is what is producing the error message.

Try just doing the install rockbox in rbutil.

Why do you keep trying to uninstall everything, or re-add the bootloader?

I've already said a few times that the bootloader was already working.

The above is the bootloader, it was working just fine.  It gets very frustrating trying to help if you just ignore what I say and do something different.

Are you running rbutil with admin rights?  Did you use autodetect?  If so, did it find the correct drive and model of ipod?  If not and you selected it manually, or you sure you selected the right drive and model?

I'm not trying to ignore what you're saying.
I'm not really understanding what you're saying.
I'm sorry.

Yes, I just hit "Auto detect" and everything is correct.
I'll try my best to listen to you now.
What should i do now?

Assuming you have the bootloader installed, just extract a rockbox build to your ipod.

http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-ipodnano/rockbox.zip

All you need to do is either

a)  In rbutil, on the second tab called Installation, click install rockbox when the Nano is connected in disk mode.

b)  extract http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-ipodnano/rockbox.zip to your nano.

I've been trying to get you to do a, as I consider it easier.  I'm assuming you have reinstalled the bootloader, if not, do that as well.

Just to clarify again as this point seems to be causing problems - if you see:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: 2.0
Ipod version: 0x000C0006

Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to
reboot then SELECT+PLAY
for disk mode

then the bootloader is already installed.  DO NOT REMOVE IT
