RockBox on S60

Hi all,

Firstly, I apologise if this post is in the wrong place, feel free to move it.

I'm new to rockbox and tinkering with firmware, but I'm interested in installing RockBox on my S60. I was wondering wether or not the development of it is up to the stage where the player is usable on a day to day basis, that is, charging, playing and editing files is all functional. I don't want to mess with it too much until I'm sure it'll work properly. I dont mind a difficult install process, provided I have detailed instructions.

Also, just out of intrest, what is the battery life like without rockbox as compared to with it?

Any information about your experiences with RockBox on this player would be greatly appreciated.

Charging isn't working yet.
Playback is.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "editing files" - do you mean the text editor plugin ?

I don't want to mess with it too much until I'm sure it'll work properly. I dont mind a difficult install process, provided I have detailed instructions.

The procedure is documented in some detail in the wiki - but I still don't recommend it as a player for end users yet.

Also, just out of intrest, what is the battery life like without rockbox as compared to with it?

No idea, I never used it without Rockbox on it.

Any information about your experiences with RockBox on this player would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot for your reply. I mean editing as adding and removing files from the player, sorry for being unclear.

If you can't charge with rockbox on there, then how do you kepp the player charged? does the AC adapter still charge it?

USB mass storage works well on the S, so adding, removing and moving music is no problem. You need to be careful to always remove it properly though (unmount/safe remove), as the Toshiba firmware does some sort of filesystem check and reformats if it finds anything wrong, before the rockbox bootloader gets loaded (so there's nothing we can do about this)

There is charging code, but it is not committed yet as it's still considered to not be tested enough.

Thanks for that mate, thats one of the main things that annooyed me about the S60, the fact that it wasnt UMS.

Does the AC adapter still work to charge it?

How reversible is the change?

As has been said, charging is not yet implemented from AC or anywhere else.  You can charge in the original firmware - the problem is that to create a dual boot bootloader you need a copy of the original firmware, which has never been released by Toshiba.  Therefore the only legit way to get it is to put the disk from the S into a caddy and copy it off.

There is a patch for charging within Rockbox which from my testing seems to work well, but as charging has the potential to go wrong, it needs much more testing before it goes into SVN, as gevaerts said.

The install is reversible and is just as easy as the install, if you have a copy of the OF as mentioned for dual booting above.  Without this copy of the OF, it is not possible to uninstall.

But if you search around for Zunepet's firmware recovery guide you'll find it. It has a copy of the hacked V updater and all the firmware files. I'm dual-booting using the nk.bin from that archive and it works perfectly.

Also, there's an unsupported build in these forums with the charging patch applied if you want to try it out.

Yes but distributing other people's software that you do not have permission to distribute is not "legit".  Hence the only legal way to do get the OF remains to dump it yourself off the disk.

Yea that's what I was thinking, I'm just giving suggestions though. Sometimes you have to break the law a bit to get ahead.

Regardless, however, while we can't stop anyone from doing what they want, the suggestions we give to people here should be the "legit" way.

That's true, but a suggestion is just a suggestion, in this case the choice to say it or not is based on ethics, not legality. I know this community is very strict with all legal issues, so if you don't want me posting this again just let me know.

How about just posting a link to the parent site in the wiki? Wouldnt that be a legit way to do it?

Also, I managed to get rockbox working on my S60, and its bloody brilliant. Thanks alot to everyone involved in the project. Charging works fine, no problems at all.

It really is quite simple.  We cannot redistribute other people's software without permission.  There, as I said, "the only legit way to get it is to put the disk from the S into a caddy and copy it off".

This is still true, and please do not discuss other ways of obtaining it here.
