Small backdrop bitmap or two color progress bar?
« on: August 29, 2008, 08:13:43 PM »
Hello,

Working on my WPS and am usng the newer bitmap strips.  It seems to be working out and makes the WPS a bit less complicated.  I have run into a issue while trying this "minimalist" approach.

Searched the forums, docs and wiki.

Ipod Video: 320x240.  I have only one backdrop item that I need, and it takes only a small part of that screen -- the color background for the status/progress bar.  Only 10 pixels high and 318 pixels long.  Single color background bar.

Is it possible to create a background using that single image (10x318) and not have to use the whole 320x240?  I tried to place a static image at the location "%x|fileame.bmp|x|y|" but the progress bar never displays so it would seem that the static image overrules the progress bar.

Alternatively, is is possible to have a two-tone progress bar that not only shows the progress but the remainder of bar in a different color?  For example, create a bar "x" pixels long, the current position be white while the remaining (usused yet) be blue.

Thanks!

Why do you wish to avoid using a fullscreen backdrop? There's no reason not to, really.

And no, I don't think there's any practical way to do what you've described without making use of the backdrop.

Thank you.  My screens are mostly black.  Except for the text and icons, menus are black.  WPS backdrop is entirely black -- except for the bar that is used to provide the contrast between the elapsed status and the remaining status.  That's it.  If what was inquired about was possible, instead of a 225KB backdrop file one could use a 10KB "backdrop".

On a player with several gigabytes of disk space, an extra 215KB of file isn't going to make a huge difference.

It, by itself, won't make much of a difference, of course.  I just try to find ways to run as lean as desired.  I delete all sorts of things I never use in Rockbox -- games, fonts, whatever.   Just checking to see if there's something I missed or maybe something new-ish like the strip bitmaps.

There's no practical reason to delete any of those unless you're out of disk space. They don't use up additional RAM, and neither will using a bigger image since the RAM is preallocated (to be sure, for example, that you won't have to stop and re-start playback when changing WPSes).

That's one of the great things about Rockbox -- delete things you don't need or want and functionality that is still desired still remains.
