Seriously... it is academic at this point; I have removed rockbox and the bootloader, and everything on my player is working fine now.
But, if it will assist you in debugging, here is the info from 'About -> About'

Version SVN $Revision: 17027 $ (m1.0.5), built Apr 21 2008 18:43:08


Windows' 'Properties' displays no information whatsoever on the 'Summary' tab for 'Revision Number' (or any other listed attributes!).

It's only academic for you. If our software is problematic we still want to try to find out and fix it.

Any chance you'd be willing to try the latest version and see if it still complains?

OK.
Downloaded and unzipped the latest "rbutilqt.exe"
It throws out a "Configuration error" msgbox, and an "Autodetection" alarm, but it does not say anything about checking network and proxy settings.
