Problems with iRiver h10 20 GB (Now with even more problems.)
« on: August 20, 2008, 09:23:31 PM »
My h10 is fairly old now, I've been using Rockbox on it since I've had it.  For the last few months it's had a problem where, after a while, the up button seems to get stuck.  I don't press anything, everything just starts going up and I can't go back in Rockbox or anything.  I have to reset it or wait for it to shutdown, which happens pretty fast now.  If I try to turn it back on immediately, the no battery symbols shows up, but if I don't mess with it for a while and try it again, it boots into Rockbox.

Is this a problem with Rockbox, or is my iRiver getting old?  I'm guessing the latter, but I have not booted into the original firmware to see if it does the same thing.  I'm guessing it's a problem with the battery, because it works fine when it's plugged in.

The H10 touchpad is known to react poorly to low voltages. With an older battery the voltage will dip deeper than normal briefly when the disk spins and other things, and this can cause the touchpad to start doing what you're experiencing.

Is there any known way to fix this?  Or would I be better off just buying a new player?  The H10 doesn't have a replaceable battery, does it?

I'm not sure, but I think the problem isn't seen as commonly in the original firmware, so there may be some way the handling of the touchpad could be improved in Rockbox, but don't take that as absolute truth. I have no firsthand knowledge of the H10 and am basically stuck providing advice based on what I've observed has happened to other people.

I'm pretty sure the battery is replaceable in certain of the H10s though. I'm just not sure which models it is replaceable for.

Ok, so I found this:  http://www.infinitybatteries.com/p-14127-iriver-h10-20gb-music-player-extended-battery-2200mah-li-ion-polymer.aspx

Does anyone know if this will fit in the h10?  There's a warning there about extended batteries but it says internal ones should fit fine.  This is an internal battery, right?

The battery is replacable if you can open the player with the appropriate security torx key (most online shops will ship one with the battery), and it is an internal battery.  That battery should fit fine, though because it's a higher capacity than the stock battery (which is 1600 mAh) it may be just a bit snug.

Just as a note:

There is a 2200MA battery that will most definitely fit in an H10. I don't have the model number handy but I know it will fit because I put one in mine, along with an 80gb hard drive. It lasts for a long time. If memory serves me, it was actually for an H320 or 340. It was a little narrower and a tad thicker, but it fit without any real modifications.

I will get/post the number when I find it.

Awesome.   Thanks.  Upgrading the hard drive sounds like something I could use too.  Do you have any guides on how to do it?

There's not much to put in a guide really - simply open the player, unplug the old drive, plug in the new one, boot up player, install Rockbox again. Done.

Ok, so, I got the new battery.  Fits perfectly.  But after I got done putting it in and charging it, I turned on the player and got an error saying system files are missing and that I need to run the recovery thing.  It boots into the emergency connection but it doesn't show up as a removable drive on my PC and the recovery program doesn't detect it.

After a while of leaving it in emergency mode, my PC says it has a removable drive, but freezes when I try to open it.  And if I try to run the recovery program, nothing comes up.

I took it apart to try and replugin the hard drive, but it's doing the same thing.  Anyone have any advice?  Maybe I'm still doing something wrong with the hard drive...
