Have a look here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353

The first generation iPod has flat sides and a plastic front.  The second generation has rounded sides and an anodized aluminum cover (in several possible colors).

Video is a new feature on the 3rd generation Nano.

The main page lists all of the players that Rockbox runs on.  (Yes, it works on the Mini.)

3rd gen plays video. 2nd gen does not.

What color is it, and is it made out of aluminum or plastic front and silver back?

Silver means it's a 2nd generation Nano.  The page I pointed you to before tells you that the 1st generation Nano is only available in black and white (in addition to having a plastic front and metal back).  Silver is the color of a 2nd generation Nano (having an anodized aluminum cover).

The bottom left icon in the "Add BBC tags" block is a framed picture.  It encloses a URL in "img" tags.

The page I linked you to before is Apple's own page for identifying your iPod.  Trust me, 1st generation Nanos do not exist in silver.

See the thread in the New Ports section. Don't ask for updates, but it will show any work we know about being done.

No, there's no way to get it to work without someone doing all the work that they're not doing.

isnt 2nd gen plays video
No. The IpodFAQ has a nice article of apple linked that tells how to distinguish players. Please check this page first before taking claims as apple should be the one knowing best how to distinguish them ...

It's the same page that I linked and repeatedly referenced above.   ;)

But it's a good point to emphasize that this information is reachable through the IpodFAQ.
