.. because apparently it's something so obvious that no one is bothering to talk about it in any other posts, but ...

I'm trying to use rockbox for the first time, and the instructions say that it needs to be in a ".rockbox" directory off the root directory of the ipod (video 5.5 if that makes any difference). The issue is that Windows does not allow you to create files/folders that begin with a period (I assume this is why I'm getting a "can't find rockbox.ipod" error when I try to boot).

How do you get around this in Windows?

What instructions are you following?

You should be using either RButil, or unzipping directly to the player, both of which create the folder for you. If the instructions don't say this, please point me to which ones don't so they can be fixed.

Who told you that you should create this folder yourself? Please read the manual, especially the installation part. It has a note explaining exactly this issue.

We have a nice installer tool called Rockbox Utility which does everything of this stuff for you.

Besides, windows can handle filenames starting with a dot just fine. Windows' explorer won't let you create such a file / folder.

Then your unzip tool is broken. I bet it creates the correct folder structure below that folder (as the zip file is called "rockbox.zip" ...)

How about you read the above posts before you start in with the patronizing tone, please? I said above that I AM reading the official manual and I DID NOT create the directory myself.

Yes, I understand you are not supposed to create the directory yourself. Once it was created with the incorrect name, I was trying to MODIFY it myself to fix the problem. Logical sequence of events, you know?

Anyway, n/m this whole thread, I was able to rename it with DOS prompt

If, and that is what I highly suspect, your unzip tool created a folder "rockbox" containing the contents of the zip file you'd still get the "no rockbox.ipod found" error as this additional top folder shouldn't be there. Renaming the folder is not the solution ...

Oh, and you're aware that we require you to use descriptive topic titles? Yours isn't, and you even tell that you expect to get flamed, so what is your problem with what you call "patronizing tone"?
