extracting failed: "unable to create a directory" error while installing

While trying to install Rockbox on Sansa E280 I get the above message. It happened while trying both auto and manual installations. Rockbox will then boot but states "No directory found" then "installation incomplete." What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for your help.

Are you running the installer as an admin user?
Is the Sansa in UMS (MSC) mode?
Does RbUtil (the automatic installer) correctly autodetect your Sansa?

Thanks Cool_Walking for the reply. I'm not sure about the first question, I am the only one using my computer so I sign in to XP as me...does that make the administrator?
Yes, I am in MSC mode. Yes the bootloader finds my Sansa. Am I sill missing something? Thanks!

What version of Rockbox Utility are you using? If you are the only user using your PC it's likely you're administrator, but it doesn't need to be this way. Please check the About / System Info output (you can copy & paste from that window) -- if you have administrator permissions it will show you this. But as far as I understood you already have the bootloader installed, which is the part that requires admin permissions.
Please check if the drive letter entered in Rockbox Utility is actually the player -- you *can* put any other valid drive letter there, but this obviously wouldn't work as expected. Rockbox Utility should be able to detect the drive letter if you use the "autodetection" button in the configuration dialog (make sure you use 1.0.6 for this).

Thanks Bluebrother...the Rockbox utility came up with the Sansa for the drive. It gave me a choice of C-something or E200. I highlighted the E200 (I actually have an E280 if that's relevent but that wasn't one of the choices. The utility version is m1.0.6 which I downloaded from the "current build" link on the left of the Rockbox website. Any clues? Thank you.
