battery life on ipod
« on: August 10, 2008, 10:53:36 AM »
I'm debating getting a 6th gen vs. 5th, but would like to know if the battery life is decreased significantly when using rockbox.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodRuntime
If you pay attention to only the most recent tests (Rockbox is much more efficient on the iPods than it used to be) you will see approximately a 10% runtime difference between Rockbox and the stock Apple firmware.

Rockbox won't run on the 6th generation ('classic'.) Am I missing something with the generation number? 5.5th generation battery life is very reasonable at about 17hours audio playback in my experience (on an 80GB model.) This compares favourably with the OF by all accounts

I think he knows that, he's just tossing up whether to get a (Rockbox-capable) 5/.5th gen, or a 6th gen and just use the Apple firmware.

that's correct,  is there much of an advantage in general of the classic over the
5.5, for me the only advantage i think I would use with rockbox, is to play flac files.  And, I probably can't get a brand new 5.5

I don't have a Classic, but it seems it just has that CoverSlide or whatever it's called, and a few more games available (though I think Rockbox still beats it in this regard, especially if you count Rockboy and ZXBox).
Check Wikipedia:

= the 5/.5 is cheaper ;D

If you're not stuck on iPods, you might be better served by a Gigabeat F/X.

1) well i need gaplless play, does a gigabeat do that?

2) Is there a noticeable difference in sound quality between AAC and Flac?

Rockbox does that - so yes.

Apples and oranges.  AAC is a lossy codec, FLAC is a lossless codec.  That being said you are best served reading about codecs at the HydrogenAudio.org wiki.  Best place to learn.  (Note I said read the wiki, if you value your internet hide you will read before posting to those forums.)

Thanks for the info, I also see there is apple lossless.  The apple store is now selling classic refurbished for 179.  I'm torn between the two but don't know if
I want to mess with all the instillation of rockbox on the 5.5.
