Plain&Simple iPod 5g Port
« on: August 09, 2008, 06:48:59 PM »

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/viewfile/Main/WpsIpod5g/PlainSimple.zip

Port of the H300 version of this theme by Mark Guay uses icons by me, and a freefont from the pack at http://rbthemes.com/fonts/convfnt.php
As the name says, it's plain, it's simple, and I can't think of any more cliche synonyms.  Album art is 200x200.

Requires:
anti-alias fonts FS#8961
and possibly bmpresize FS#5697
Recommended Builds: tdtooke Underground build

Possibly one of the cleanest themes I've ever seen! The font pulls it all together.

Apparently it is using an anti-aliased font (AAF) that was converted using the Font Converter found at the link provided.

Unfortunately, it is only supported by custom builds  :-[

Else this would have made the ideal Cabbie Default Font

Personally, I think the antialiased font makes it look like it's out of focus. It doesn't seem to have worked very well for this one.

The Font is Tuffy Bold, size 13 pixels on the font convertor website... but it is clearly lager than this... the font works down to 10 pixels then gets unreadable, j is always unreadable :( as is the forward slash.

The theme would work fine with any font as the viewports don't cross the album art.

Well that is what years of staring at Rockbox screens will do to you.   ;)

I think it looks perfect.  I knew the AAF is for custom builds, but seeing that coaxed me to try it out.  I didn't even realize a patch for AAF existed until I saw that screenshot, and I remember reading long ago that AAF for Rockbox would never even be possible.  Go figure - I love Rockbox!   ;D

I'd like to try this theme but when I try and download it I'm brought to an " Attachment '?' does not exist" error page.

yes, it does look a little out of focus, but in my opinion it's definitely an improvement. I prefer a slight blurryness over grungy edges.

I've never thought of sharp edges as being "grungy", just "precise". Otherwise it contrasts pretty sharply with anything that can't be antialiased. It basically makes the UI look very inconsistent to me. Compare it to the Clock and Play icons he's used for the WPS screen for example.

yes, the icons are the big weakness in this theme. it would look much better with anti aliased icons - on the other hand that would make it impossible to use different colored backdrops with this theme without messing up the looks...

sharp edges do look "precise", but that precision looks wrong to me, because I know that the outlines of the font are supposed to be smooth and rounded - without any steps. I like fake smoothness better than faulty precision.
Sharp edges look great on very thin or small fonts (for example Helvetica up to size 18). On bolder ones like this one I like the smoothness.

It doesn't help the "blurry" argument that the album art in the screenshot is also soft focused.

Try to convert with this one, it should be more up-to-date than the font converter on that website.
It's just the newest version of the converter, compiled from the anti-aa font patch page  ;)
