well, did you configure Rockbox Utility correctly using the configuration dialog? Installation itself requires a configuration, and the install relies on this -- detection is done in the configuration. Detecting the player *needs* to work (at least for a sansa).
Second, make sure the mountpoint (aka. drive letter) configured is correct. If you can't access your player as drive then there is something really wrong (most likely it's not in MSC mode, but that is required). You *can* misconfigure Rockbox Utility ... (like installing on a wrong drive).

Besides, running chkdsk /f on that drive isn't a bad idea in any case. You might also want to check the player with some flash test tool (google around for such tools).

Success!!!  I use ACDSee 8 for my viewer.  Apparently, ACDSee doesn't like the whole Sansa/Rockbox thing.  Once I opened the "official" My Documents, I got everything to work fine.  Now all I have to do is download my songs again and I should be good to go.
