Gigabeat F40 defaults to same settings on startup

I'm not sure where to put this question, but this seemed like the best place. I've been trying to fix some broken WPS's and all of a sudden, it starts defaulting back to the cabbie v2 theme everytime it restarts. Additionally, other settings reset themselves (backlight duration, for example) as well, and when trying to re-initialize the database, the HD just keeps spinning until I shut the thing down. Any ideas what happened?

You could try clearing your settings and doing a clean shut down and boot to see if it changes anything.  Also, it's worth reporting the revision of Rockbox that you're using and noting whether or not updating your build fixes things.

This started with build 18186 (loaded 2 days ago) and still is happening with today's build.

You didn't mention if clearing your settings helped.  A workaround until we can figure out a fix will be to save your desired settings in a .cfg file and load that each time you boot.

Thanks. I'm waiting to see if clearing the settings worked. It held a different theme after rebooting, but I tried updating the database and it looks like it's not going to stop spinning again.

Try initializing the database instead of updating it.

Actually, that's what I did. No dice. I shut it down and it's back to the old settings again. :'(

So, the database finished initializing but when you rebooted the previous settings weren't saved?

edit: Re-reading the thread, I now guess that it neither initialized nor saved the settings.

Exactly. It doesn't seem to finish initializing. Just spins until I shut it down, or in this last case, it drains the battery and shuts itself off.

If you don't mess with the database at all does it save settings?  You reported previously that it remembered the theme you were using.

No. It always goes back to the same theme (cabbie v2), even though I load various different ones (that all worked fine yesterday morning.)


Edit....I was able to do a full re-initialize (and it finished committing the database on reboot) finally. After that, the settings stayed for a couple power-downs and reboots, and then after the third reboot, it went back to the cabbie v2 theme as before and the other settings reverted back as well. Bizarre. Thoughts, anyone?

File system problems so saving / reading the config.cfg in rockbox.cfg is having trouble would be my guess.

Run a chkdsk /f on the gigabeat, and see if that helps.

Good to hear that worked.  I was about to suggest a chkdsk as well, though I hesitated since you didn't seem to be having other signs of filesystem problems.
