Frozen X5

Howdy Gang

I put a few albums on my X5 last night & it boots up okay, but on boot up the little disc spinning in the top right corner doesn't disappear at all and after about 5 seconds the entire system pauses.  Any ideas on whether this is related to the files I put on or something more fundamental?  Is it best to format the entire drive or simply update the firmware?
