Some (probably) standard questions
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:02:40 AM »
I've just installed RockBox on my new (well, refurbed) 30gb ipod 5g. I've had a number of questions but thankfully the manual and the search button helped for most of them, however two remain:
1. Can I disable the iTunes auto-start feature on my pc so that when I plug my ipod into my pc it won't go to that "Do not disconnect screen" and try to start itunes (hopefully just acting like a usb thumb drive and charging itself)
2. How do I add new songs to my ipod? I let my itunes import all my songs into the ipod, then used that tool (itdb2tc) to put the playlists on my ipod, but I'm not sure how to go about adding new songs to it (or videos for that matter)

Thanks :)

1)  I don't know, but I seem to remember there is a use disk mode options in itunes - maybe that would help?

2)  However you want.  Copy and paste them, or if you want use itunes or similar synching software.  If you use itunes (or something else that treats it as an iPod) you will need to use the Rockbox database to find your music.  If you copy and paste you can use Rockbox to browse your iPod like a disk, but the OF (original firmware) won't see your music (if that matters to you).  For films, you will have to just copy and paste or similar, as itunes doesn't recognise MPEG1/2, which is the format Rockbox uses.

Thanks, but if I drag and drop files, will it still keep the library organized, or does it need some special folder/file naming convention?

If by library you mean database, then that is built from metadata so the organisation of files on the disk is irrelevant.  That's why it still works even if you use itunes which moves and renames everything when you transfer.

If you copy and paste you can just browse directories and files directly, so the organisation depends on what directory structure you used.

I think he's referring to the Itunes Database. For that database you need Itunes. Rockbox database is completely different and has nothing to do with Itunes.
