hard drive for ipod video
« on: July 29, 2008, 11:36:37 AM »
I have been looking for info about the iPod hard drive, but have been having minimal luck. I was hoping to upgrade my 30gig to something better.

i have already looked at the hard drive replacement page:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/HardDriveReplacement#1_8_Drive_Comparison
but im not sure how up-to-date that is. Also, im having trouble finding online stores that carry >60gig hard drives. None of my local retailers seem to have any ideas what im talking about, the computer specialty shops dont carry them, so it looks like im pretty SOL. I even tried contacting a few help representatives (i think toshiba and seagate?) but they are useless.

i found a few "iPod repair / upgrade" sites, but they want an arm, a leg, and a firstborn for their services. I have no fear in taking my iPod apart, so thats not a worry

Any help (as far as online stores, or specific hard drives that are currently in production) would be appreciated.

Other information:
30gig ipod (means i need the thin drives, not the 8mm ones)
im in canada, so they gotta be able to ship here affordably
should be >60gigs, i think i saw a 120gig drive somewhere, but that might have been an 8mm one

Thanks!

the MK8022GAA  is an 8mm drive, i need the smaller variety (4mm or 6mm or whatever it is) that fits in the 30gig case

According to the HardDriveReplacement page and Toshiba themselves it's 5mm:

Getting regular online stores to ship to Canada is a pain - I know because I live in Quebec.  All I can suggest is searching the web for the hard drive model number and crossing your fingers.  As for other sized drives I believe the wiki page is up to date.  You also have the option of replacing the back cover of the iPod to accomodate a larger drive as this fellow has done: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=17778.msg130148#msg130148

will something like ST7120221CA work? Im not too familiar with the connectors, seems like every other place is trying to call the same connector something different...  when im searching what should i look for and what do i avoid?

also looking at these seagate drives:
ST7120221DE
ST7120221DEG

ST7120221CA -> That's a CE-ATA connector like the new 160GB iPods.  An adaptor might be available but I don't think anyone has tried it.

It looks like the ST7120221DE should work, nice find.  And I have no idea what a Drop Sensor is on the ST7120221DEG.

Edit: The ST7120221DE is marked as 5mm on that website but 8mm on the wiki page.  Not sure who's right.  Oh, it's been discontinued anyway.

And I have no idea what a Drop Sensor is on the ST7120221DEG.

It sounds like the drive can detect a sudden shock and immediately park its heads, so as to not cause damage to the drive platters.

The iPod line has this functionality built in as well IIRC.

drop sensor in the drive means its got an accelerometer or something that can detect freefall and it shuts the drive down to minamize damage. In some cases it can also detect things like vigration, so if your player / notebook is on the dash of a car and you start on a gravel road, it will try to save the drives. My toshiba laptop has them, and a utility that can show a 3d represintation of how the drive is orientated (what sort of tilt it has, etc)

pretty cool, but in my case somewhat useless.

Also i didnt find any other info about those drives. Such is my luck.
