Battery Life iPod 5G vs 5.5G
« on: July 26, 2008, 09:29:17 AM »
Yes, I looked at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodRuntime , the problem is, that there is only one measure for the 5.5G without the CF card mod. Funny is, the measured time of the 80GB 5.5G is lower than some measures of the 5G iPod.

I always thought, the 5.5G has improved battery of the 5G?

Right now I own a 5G 30GB. My intention was to buy the 80GB 5.5G to get more battery life and more space. Is that reasonable at all?

Are there any other measures for battery lifetime of a rockboxed 5.5G?

If you look carefully at the numbers Apple claims for the 5th Gen vs those they claim for the 5.5th Gen you will notice that music playback runtime has not improved at all, only video playback runtime.
This strongly implies there is no difference outside the screen / backlight.

The 60 and 80 GB models shipped not only with a dual-platter hard drive inside that extra thick case, but also 32MB additional RAM and a larger battery (when compared to either generation's 30GB edition.)

So, yes, you will get longer battery life out of a 80GB 5.5th Gen model, but most likely not a noticeable improvement over a 60GB 5th Gen one.

If you compare the prices for a 60 or 80 GB 5G or 5.5G, you will get the new, really improved 6G for the same, but without rockbox.  :-[

Doesn't sound really improved to me.

So, can you recommend something bigger, longer playing? Rockboxable, of course.

Not the first time I look at this guide and end up with an iPod..
Can I buy the original iPod batteries somewhere?
Or are the batteries of www.ipodjuice.com recommendable?

iPod batteries are 2-a-penny. Not literally but easy to find. I got a refurbished ('shop-grade') 80GB ipod about 3 months ago and I get between 14 and 19+ hours playback, of music only, with rockbox. I've never once used the apple firmware. The only problems I've had regard large playlist management (make, save and display) which can drain the battery very quickly in my experience. Based on what I've read on these forums, I'd go for an iRiver H3xx or Toshiba Gigabeat if I were you - both are 'mature' targets and have some unique features. The Toshiba has for instance a very fast processor and large screen. For pure battery life, I'd go with the Cowon M5L - indisputably the longest living. I can vouch for cowon iAudio as I had a X5L for about 3 years and it both lasted long and sounded good. All are probably hard enough to come by, iPod 5.5 probably least so (?) Here's where I got mine www.deviltronics.com

keep the faith
