Want to know Rockbox better, problems compiling?
« on: July 24, 2008, 10:04:43 PM »
I'm curious about some patches, the ins and outs of 'compiling', and the syntax of languages. I've downloaded and installed the Cygwin build environment, retrieved the source code from the 'Daily Build' page but I get lost every time at this point: "Make your way back to C:\Rockbox\, open the folder called Home and the folder called guest within that. Move your newly downloaded file into this folder (C:\Rockbox\home\guest)" Is this referring to a folder I should have created or a downloaded folder? I'm confused! Sorry I'm stupid

I think thats referring to the folders cygwin creates when you install it.  The rockbox source contains folders like apps, firmware, uisimulator, etc (you can see all of them by looking at the file you downloaded).

However, I strongly recommend you read the SVN tutorial and use that to get code instead of downloading it from the website.  SVN is much easier to manage and keep up to date with.

I've successfully set up cygwin a few times, and I'm struggling to make sense of those instructions too.  There *is* no c:\rockbox\home\guest\ directory.  Maybe it's assuming you followed the VMware instructions or something.

You can just extract the .7z file somewhere (NOT somewhere with a space in the path e.g. "c:\program files\"), then continue on from Compiling The Source Code.

As saratoga said, using SVN instead of the .7z archive is easier to manage in the long run.

Big thanks both. I've installed Subversion and used that to retrieve source files etc. (I'm on a steep learning curve here!) Thanks again
