Rockbox bricked my iPod Nano?
« on: July 19, 2008, 06:38:04 AM »
A couple of months ago , i got an iPod Nano off my friend . It was quite old and the battery didnt last very long.I installed rockbox onto the iPod.It installed and i used it for a couple of hours , the battery level dropped so i decided to charge it with an apple iPod charger .The charger then made rockbox go into the apple reset screen.I waited for it to load , but it never loaded , just froze at that screen. It then stopped working even when i plugged it into a power source.I thought the battery was the source of this problem , so i took it and got it fixed and they said it wasnt the battery... Is this normal for a player to crash while booting? I want rockbox again cos its AWESOME but i dont want it because it might brick it again..

Re: Rockbox bricked my iPod Nano? Bug in the r18093
« Reply #1 on: July 19, 2008, 07:30:07 AM »
Just now noticed that on my iPod mini the attempt to connect with the PC the USB screen appears and remains hanging. With the version r18092 that did not happen.
Reset the iPod with MENU & SELECT, keep MENU pressed to boot into the “Apple mode” and copy the file rockbox.ipod (just modified my post) from the r18092 onto the iPod.

Works great,

br,
Martin

Rockbox.info is just a text file, used by RBUtility to identify your player. It couldn't affect USB mode.

Or maybe it just occasionally freezes when rebooting into disk mode right now (it does) and coincidence just lined up...

Sorry for my bad english, but i´m not a native speaker.

I tried it it once again and removed rockbox with the rockbox utility tool, then I used the iPod updater to erase the iPod completly.
Rebooted once again.
Then I installed the newest rockbox SW and bootloader with the RB Utility.

Rebooted. Rockbox works well, then when I connect the iPod to the PC it crashes in the USB-Screen.

Then I deleted the rockbox.ipod file in the root-system and wrote a copy of the r19092 to the ipod.
Done. Works again.

PS.: just saw the problem. i ment the rockbox.ipod, not the rockbox.info-File!

If you *just* copy the old rockbox.ipod file, you may encounter errors with plugins and codecs. You should never use a different rockbox.ipod than the rest of your build. Just use all the old files, since you're trying to use an old build anyway.
