does rockbox support these two features?
« on: July 18, 2008, 08:36:05 AM »
I have a Sansa e250 and am thinking of maybe trying to install the Rockbox interface to replace my current one. I have verified I can do so, so I'm good there. I actually really don't mind the current Sansa interface, but there are two annoyances that I'm hoping Rockbox can hande & fix.

First, will Rockbox correctly resume mp3 files after stuff has been added or deleted from the unit. Here's what I am referring to; I pretty much listen to talk radio mp3 programs all the time. They are files that I have downloaded & usually are 4-5hrs long per file. It's one big file so when I turn the unit off in the middle of listening, it will resume where I left off when I turn it back on. However, if I add or delete files to the unit, it messes its resume playback functionality and when I turn the unit back on after adding a file or two, it winds up being on some other mp3 file that I wasn't previously listening to. Will rockbox maybe help correct this?

My second request is regarding it search functions. If I do have to start listening to an mp3 file over (as stated above), I will then have to fast forward to the point where I left off. Sometimes it can be 2-3+hrs into the file that I have to get to. Currently the only way to get to that point is to hold down the fast forward button for a long time to get to the 2-3hr point. Does rockbox at least have a better search function by chance? I was hoping it had some sort of "go to" option that would allow me to just plug in the duration time for the file that I want to get to.

To answer both of your questions at once: yes, and yes. Rockbox allows you to create bookmarks for long files, so you can stop, place a bookmark, and resume at a later time.

There's more information about bookmarks in the manual.

I'll just qualify both answers a little:

1)  As I understand it, how bookmarks currently work is they stores an index of the current folder, and then resumes to a position of that index.  If you have deleted or added a file before it in that folder, it will no longer be the correct index.  However (thanks to Lear for the info), it also checks the filename for the index, and if that is wrong it tries to identify the correct file by name, and thus should work just fine.

2)  As for searching within the file, it has both accelerating normal seeking (i.e. the longer you seek, the faster it will go)  and a mode that allows you to skip a certain period of time with each click of skip.  However, unless it has been added when I wasn't looking, there isn't a goto fucntion in the sense of you enter a time and it goes straight to it.

To me, it just sounds as if the answer to both questions is the simple Resume Playback functionality. This both restarts with the correct file and in the same place as when shutdown.

If mcf57 is just shutting down and then starting up to carry on listening to the same show,  bookmarks are not even required.

Well, I installed the Rockbox software on my e250 Sansa player. WOW, what a world of difference. It is 50 times better than the Sansa interface. Bookmarks are great for my needs and the searching functions are fabulous too. If needed, I can easily get to a point where I want to within a 4+hr mp3 file. Its quick and doesn't take forever like the old Sansa interface.

I have installed all the themes too and that seems like a cool feature as well. I've only tried a few, but I really like the default theme the best so far. However, let me ask this. What is that default theme called? I ask cause I changed themes, but couldn't figure out how to get back to the default theme. I wound up just reloading the .rockbox folder as if I had just install it and that is how I got the default back. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this for the future and maybe someone could tell me what theme I can load to get this default back.

The default theme is Cabbie (version 2).

On the Sansas, if you hold down the Record button while powering up, all settings will be reset to their defaults (this includes theme settings). There's an option in the Settings menu itself to reset to defaults as well.

Yea, I found the "reset" option within the settings. I wound up using that another time too (was having a bookmarking issue). Thanks for the default theme name though. Now I can browse the themes and easily get back to the original one.
