Video 30G with 80GB HD
themaiday:
The rear case is not that pricey (http://cgi.ebay.de/NEW-IPOD-80GB-5th-Gen-VIDEO-CHROME-REAR-CASE-SPARE_W0QQitemZ140246385989QQihZ004QQcategoryZ48680QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem), but I just heard the same story about the logic board from someone else.
Until now, I have not found someone who got exactly that working.
Upgrading from 60/80GB shouldn't be the problem..
New battery and a new, bigger HDD for less than an used 5.5G sounds too nice ::)
LambdaCalculus:
GodEater was correct in saying that the logic board incompatibility story is utter rubbish. Most DAPs don't care if you replace the hard drive in them at all, so long as there's enough space on it for a firmware/system partition.
Chronon:
True, some users have used the CF mod with 5g iPods. That seems to thoroughly discredit this business about "not recognizing the new drive".
themaiday:
Did they upgrade from 5G or 5.5G?
Chronon:
Well, I partially inferred this from this statement by Tarkan:
--- Quote ---iPod 5g or 5.5g with certain cards throws up a PANIC ATA -1 error, the current build works ok on CF cards like the Sandisk Extreme III 16Gb but gives the error when used on the A-Data Speedy 32Gb.

Users have also upgraded 5g iPods to use larger HDs. We have a wiki page here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/HardDriveReplacement
I am not aware of any such problems with different capacity hard drives being rejected. As far as I know, one only has to know what connector the drive uses (ZIF 40, 50 pin, etc.) and the dimensions.
