Hi peeps, I've just got a video 30GB and replaced the damaged HD with a 80GB and new backplate. Works OK but needs rockboxing ;D
Can you tell me which version I should go for? ???
I guess it's the 30GB one......

Thanks for such top banana software

LambdaCalculus:
Yes, keep using the 30GB build.

An explanation:

The 30GB iPod video has 32MB of RAM. the 60/80GB videos have 64MB. Thus, using the 60/80GB build on your iPod would cause problems.

Hey, thanks for the rapid response mate, that makes a lot of sense now.. it has difficulty waking up sometimes and I expect that may have something to do with it  ;)
The 30G RockBox is is then,
Thanks again

I also considering to upgrade my 5G 30GB with a 80GB HDD, and asked ukipodrepairs about the hardware compatibility concerning the larger rear case for 8mm drives. They told me the following:

--- Quote ---the rear case/60gb battery will fit a 30gb but you need the head phone jack as well AND not all 30gb logic boards can be upgraded to a 60/80gb hard drive. Some late boards allow it but most dont accept the bigger drive
--- End quote ---

Is the statement true? How to find out my logic board version?

GodEater:
Sounds like utter rubbish to me - I've never heard of a an upgrade like that not working "due to the logic board not recognising the new drive".

If you want to stick with the same back plate as the 30GB has - you WILL need a single platter (5mm thick) Hard drive for your upgrade, which will limit your options - but if you can find the back plate from a 60 or an 80, you can use the dual platters (8mm thick) too.
