Viewing movies on iPod, audio problem
« on: July 15, 2008, 07:58:04 PM »
I have an iPod Video 30gig and I have been using rocbox on it for quite a while now, love this OS. Anyway whenever i go to watch a video the sound is always accelerated and doesn't match the video, like the sound cuts out halfway through the movie. I have been using WinFF to convert, but I have the same problem with movies that I have downloaded. If you don't understand what I am trying to say I apologize and will try to do better. Thanks for any help.

What SVN revision of Rockbox are you using, and do you have both Skip Frames and Limit FPS set to yes in Mpegplayer?

I'm am using Rb apple ipod video 16:9, I think I tried 4:3 and got the same result. And I have toyed with those settings but it didn't seem to make a diffrence.

Thanks.

That doesn't actually answer either of the questions I asked.

The SVN Revision is the version number of Rockbox itself. The other question has to do with what settings you pick in the plugin in Rockbox.

My apologies, I didn't know what SVN meant :(, anyway it is 0.41.

As for the secound question I just tried toggling both on and off and it made no diffrence.

SVN numbers start with an r and then 5 numerica digits.  The most current is presently "r18064".  It should say at the bottom of the splash screen when you boot rockbox.

There is no Rockbox version 0.41. Maybe you're telling me the WinFF version number or something?

I didn't ask you to toggle them, I asked you what they were set to. Please, try to just answer my questions, and not experiment, or I'll have a much harder time helping you.

If you don't know what a term is, or are uncertain, ask about it rather than trying to guess what I mean, as that may cause further confusion later if I don't immediately catch on that you misunderstood.

No idea if this will help, but you're a couple thousand revisions out of date.  You should probably try a recent build before asking for support.

And both options *must* be set to yes for videos to play properly. If you set limit to "No", the video will play back at a different speed than the audio creating problems similar to what you described.

Update to the current version, and set both options to yes and try again.

Does the converted video play back properly on a computer?

I posted a few months ago a post that explained how to encode correctly a video for iPod using FFmpeg without the WinFF graphical interface.

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=16330.msg122226#msg122226

Just extract FFmpeg (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/ffmpeg/) to the C:\WINDOWS\System32\ folder, then open a terminal (Start --> Run, type in "cmd" then click OK) paste the command line that's in my post in the terminal and replace the parameters INPUTFILENAME and OUTPUTFILENAME by your values before hitting the Enter on the keyboard. You may need to change "mp3" to "libmp3lame".

I switched over to RockBox on my Apple Ipod 5.5G.

Can I watch the movies that I originally had on my Ipod. If so, then how?

Thanks.

I think you got your answer in another thread.  But I'll answer here for the sake of others who find their way here by searching.  Rockbox plays MPEG-2 so you'll have to transcode videos to the proper format if you want to play them.

Bear in mind that your particular model of iPod has a Broadcom chip for decoding video that we don't know how to use yet.  Video performance in the original firmware benefits from the use of this chip, so you're probably better off watching most of your videos in the original firmware.  You can easily boot into the Apple firmware any time you like by following the instructions in the manual.

Cheers for that. Read this post after the one in the other thread.

Apple firmware for videos, and RockBox for audio.
