I just wanted to distinguish them as the s/pdif in the Archoses is not optical, just electrical (and didn't think about these details, I admit).

One more detail I did not notice yesterday :)
iriver H100 and H300 series do not have a dedicated microphone input. The only input is line-in. The "external microphone" option in the original firmware just raises the input gain. Unfortunately this results in a high level of noise when using external microphones without an external amplifier. The input has just one special property - it provides power for microphones with potential between 3 and 4 volts (called also plug-in power). The power is always on.

indeed... but what is a mic input more than having power on the plug and enough gain to make it usable? And it actually works. (I admit I do use an external mic-amp for better quality and more mic-power)
soap:
Ipod 5th gen has line input.
