unable to boot Rockbox on IpodVideo 5G
« on: July 12, 2008, 11:15:55 AM »
I (believe I) have downloaded the correct version of rockbox and run ipodpatcher to install rockbox on my Ipod 5G (30gb video).
Problem is that rockbox does not boot (I see a permanent Apple logo) but, if I trun on the hold key, the apple OS boots correctly.This makes me think that the bootloader is installed correctly and the .rockbox folder it is not created the right way (something to do with Windows vista?).
Other experiment I have done is to download a different build (i.e. the one for ipod 4G) and the bootloader stops telling be that the checksum is wrong.

Any help?

I'm confused.  First you say that you get stuck on the Apple logo but then the "bootloader stops telling me that the checksum is wrong."  Do you get an error message if you install the proper build for your player or not...?

let me explain better

1) if I download the correct rockbox build, the boot process stops on the apple logo
2) if I download a WRONG rockbox build, the boot process stops giving me the wrong checksum message

and I add a new one
3) if I delete the .rockbox directory, I got the message (which is normal) from the bootloader that is unable to find a rockbox version

here is a result of ipodpatcher -l

Maybe someone with more experience with the iPod Video can help you out.  I suggest trying the other Video build in the meantime - perhaps the hard drive has been replaced and you actually have the other model.

The 30GB build will work on any 5th / 5.5th generation model as the only difference between it and the 60/80GB version is the amount of RAM it tries to use.  Since the 30GB version only tries to use 32MB it is safe on the 32MB (30GB models) and 64MB (60/80GB models) units.
