Non-ipod owners, what program do you use to sync with?
« on: July 11, 2008, 09:57:51 PM »
Just curious, I just switched to Rockbox on my sansa and it works wonderfully.

I am able to drag and drop my music onto my sansa and rockbox finds it perfectly if I do it in MSC mode and not MTP mode.

Question is, what is a good media manager program to use to sync my music/podcasts etc, other than having to drag and drop everything, and still have rockbox recognize the new files on the sansa device?

Thanks for reading and replying, I appreciate your time!

I assume you want Windows software as you didn't specify an O/S.
Many people like Media Monkey.

When I use Windows I simply (ha! little is simple in FB2K) use Foobar2000.  I have it set up so I can right-click one (or more) of my FLAC files and transcode to .mp3 on the fly, writing to the Rockbox player as it goes.

Thanks for the reply, and yes I should have specified.   Windows is the OS I am using.

Now when I use Media Monkey and have the player in MTP mode, Rockbox doesn't see the files I transferred.  Is this normal?

If I sync them with MSC mode it sees them fine.  Just wanted to make sure I am using it correctly.

Because for some reason, when in MSC mode, MM says it is transferring files, but it really doesn't.

Anyway, don't want to get too far off topic.

What do you mean by "Rockbox doesn't see them"? Do you mean "They don't show up in the database after an update" or "I can't find them under 'Files'" or something else entirely?

I use Allway Sync (in fact I upgraded from the free to the paid version).

It's actually a general sync program but it works well for me.

I use microsofts sync toy, a word of warning though, use version 1.4 not the new beta 2.0 as the latter does not move deleted files to the recycle bin in fact it dosn't seem to delete them at all.

I second the recommendation of Foobar2000 -- you can even use it to copy already-encoded files over to your Rockboxed device to the folder/subfolder/filename scheme of your choice.

I first use mediamoney to sync my whole library, then manually add new albums through a file browser.

I would also recommend foobar2000, but it can be a bit complicated to fully understand. A simple generic sync program I also recommend is treecomp.

I've tried Songbird Media Player with a friend's Sansa e260R and found that it works wonders in Rhapsody (UMS) mode. Since Songbird supports Vorbis and FLAC as well as MP3, this makes it a breeze for him to add music to his Sansa.

You can do anything with Foobar2000 if you're willing to put a little time into it.
rsync on *nix is good too. ;)

Sorry for the slow reply, and yes to both of your questions.  They don't show up as files or after updating the database and restarting the player.

Is no biggy though, I have just been dragging and dropping and that works well so far.  I appreciate your reply though.

Yes, you need to use MSC not MTP.  Why MediaMonkey doesn't seem to transfer them properly in MSC is better directed at the MediaMonkey developers :)

Thanks to everyone for the Foobar recommendation.  I have downloaded it and enjoying it.
The one little thing I am liking the most so far is the ability to convert files, even convert video podcasts to audio only, that part is really nice.

Thanks again everyone!
