Non-ipod owners, what program do you use to sync with?

Please forgive my ignorance, but why is there need to sync? I never sync, I just drag new files to my Sansa and they all work fine.

I use sync toy that has an echo mode this allows me to keep a master copy on the PC then any changes to it,
additions, deletions or tag updates etc get directly reflected on the player.
Now on the nasty day somehing horrible happens to the player it is easy to format it and start again.
