ipod sad face

well, i got the sad face for the second time but this time i cant force it into disk mode

any suggestions?

I think you're doing it wrong.  Just keep trying to get into disk mode.  Apparently it can take up to a minute of holding down the buttons for it to work.

Most likely. My iPod color is exhibiting the same behavior, and even when it starts up, it sporadically freezes when accessing the drive.

You can either get a transplant drive from another iPod (4th gen or earlier), try for a CompactFlash mod, or visiting iFixit for a new drive.

There is a possibility that something has become unseated inside.  If you're particularly brave you could open it up and have a look.
