Reorganization of the WPS Gallery
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:40:12 PM »
I would like to start a discussion about the WPS Gallery.
The unofficial http://rockbox-themes.org site is absoutely outdateted and at least since r17763 the WPS Themes don't work. It doesn't seems to me, that the author will open the page to edit again. The problem is that beginners especially, who are not so familiar with the english language, doesn't read the hint and try the themes from the rockbox-themes.org site. Because of that I would erase the link from the Rockbox Extras site completely. Unfortunately popular WPS Themes like Azure Ultimate from the rockbox-theme.org site are just updatet in Forums. The reasons could be, that the WPS Gallery isn't very attractive and famous. On the WPS site some links in the first paragraph don't work.

We should make announcments in the forums (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/...) to upload their Wps, also in the WPS Gallery.
Besides it would be great, if user could upload their WPS with a formular. This would improve the clarity and isn't much effort.

I'm looking forward to hear your opinions...

We've always recommended people upload to the WPS gallery on the wiki. People do not listen, or complain that they can't take the time to learn how.

A new official repository is currently being worked on (although is currently at a bit of an impass at the moment).  This will replace both the WPS gallery and rockbox-themes.org and will be much more "automatic" and easier to use.

Patience.  :)

I'm slowly working on the new themes site (it's been on hold for a few months), but hope to go back to it in the next few days.

It's written in PHP and will probably use a mysql database.  The intention is for the code that runs the site to be publically available via the Rockbox SVN (and designed so developers can easily install local copies of it), so everyone will be welcome to hack on it and submit patches in the usual way.

Hi,
I have seen, that the link from the Extras site was erased, but unfortunately nothing changed in the WPS Gallery. Unfortunately most WPS, which are uploaded there aren't attractive.  We should ask ourselves, why that's the case.
Ok, the design of the site isn't very attractive, but I think the most important
thing is to relieve the WPS designers the upload of their themes. A formular would be very useful, so people doesn't have to edit the site and people haven't to register.
Besides a input from a formular would make the site more structured and clearly.
I can't program with PHP, otherwise I would try to improve the WPS site by myself, but I program with Python, and I can't imagine, that a feature like that is difficult or expensive.

Do you think it's doesn't useful? I think it's important, that the official WPS site from Rockbox isn't outdated.

Someone is already working on setting up a new, official site for the themes.  The reorganization is somewhat temporary to separate abandoned and out-dated, non-working, and non-licensed themes from the ones that are up-to-date and/or appropriately licensed.  Once the new site is up, the themes that are properly licensed and up-to-date will be moved to the new site.  The "graveyard" is there to hold onto the other themes until such time as their authors update them and properly license them.

Well, this "feature" has one major drawback: it needs someone doing the work. And as all work here is done voluntarily (as you most likely know) it will get done when someone intersted finds enough time. Having an official theme site is planned since months now ...

I didn't wanted to be unkind, I know that Rockbox is a OpenSource Project and people spend their freetime for working on it. I want just to initiate a discussion about the WPS Gallery to improve it, because I don't know that's currently in development. (Sorry, I haven't found something in the Tracker.)

there is no task in the tracker, you need to check svn directly (and not rockbox main trunk). There's also some talk about it every now and then on irc.
