iPod Video 30G - Stuck
« on: July 07, 2008, 08:45:03 AM »
I've hit a brick wall with this.... any advice much appreciated. The highlights...

* I downloaded the Rockbox Util thingy for my (Intel) iMac. Nothing doing, it just gives the error "The application rbutilqt quit unexpectedly". I've tried this on a couple of different Macs. Same result.

So, plan B...

* I followed the instructions for manual install (I think) to the letter using the latest build for my type of ipod. It all went as advertised but on boot I got the "partition not found" message. I know this is less than comprehensive, but where should I start looking or what further information can I supply to debug this?

As I say, any pointers appreciated.

You may have to format your iPod to FAT32 first. Details on how to do that are here:

Also, which iPod are you trying to install to?

Hi,

It's an iPod Video 30G - 5G.

If I change to FAT32 doesn't that mean I'm somewhat stuffed for using it with a Mac?

Well, you won't be able to use it with iTunes for the Mac, but you can still use it as an external hard drive, or with another application that can sort your music for you.

I was under the impression that itunes for the Mac will work with it just fine - both windows and mac itunes work with both win and mac pods - it is just that they will only restore to their native format.  (I could of course be wrong :))

iTunes for Mac OS seems to insist on having the hard drive formatted as HFS+, but I digress. Question answered, and the day is saved once again! :)

Other people have reported success using FAT32 iPods with MacOS iTunes. MacOS just takes a little longer to recognize them than Windows does, or than it does for HFS+ ones.

I've formated my iPod to FAT32 as per the Manual. Macs and PCs can use a FAT32 formatted iPod but only a Mac can use an HFS+ formatted iPod. Rockbox only works with FAT32, as per the Manual.

If you use iTunes to format the iPod it will be FAT32 on a Windows machine and it will format it to HFS+ on a Mac, then you will have to re-format it as FAT32 to use Rockbox.
