time for a new gigabeat
« on: July 05, 2008, 11:29:42 AM »
So I cracked my gigabeat F's screen and with no replacement parts in sight Im starting to think about what my next RB'ed player will be.

Im really interested in the gigabeat S, what is it's current status?(is it already listed somewhere)

Obviously I loved my gigabeat F so thats high on my list (if only i could track down an X)

My other thought was an iPod, Im just a lil wary of the processor speeds as I enjoy mpegplayer and rockboy. can anyone ,who has used both, comment on any noticeable pros/cons in performance?

Thanks for any help. I can't wait to be full rockboxed again

Simply put, the iPod Video is not going to give you good frame rates in MpegPlayer or in Rockboy.
The Nano, on the other hand, has no trouble driving its small screen full-speed for videos.

The Gigabeat S port's info can be found in the wiki:

and in the "New Ports" forum thread:

the iPod video does indeed have CPU speed problems for mpeg. The other ipods don't have that, but they have a much smaller screen.

I'm also a bit doubtful about rockboy playability on the ipod. The controls really aren't designed for general gaming. I don't really know though, as I never actually used rockboy

Im not sure why I could find that on ebay myself, oh well same price as a new F10 (which is what I have) Is it possible to plug a X screen into my F? and mod the case I guess(maybe Im getting greedy wanting that extra .2 in screen realestate)
If RB was installed on a gigabeat S right now, what could it do? Play music? plugins? mpegplayer?
the wiki doesn't really detail that kinda stuff, thanks

The only functionality missing from the Gigabeat S port is charging. Every other bit of Rockbox works fine.

I assume it charges normally when booted into OF, so it's just the install that more difficult than other ports.
this page http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/TargetStatus
says that the V is the same as the S, but I couldn't see any other info to confirm. Do you know if the install works on the V  in the same way as the S.
Thanks

That's basically it, yes

It says that the hardware components are the same. There could still be differences, and I've not heard of anyone running rockbox on a V.

I wonder how a S build would turn out on a V since the screen is a different orientation. Any thoughts?

Don't try a S build on a V.

And if you have the slightest doubts, don't try to run Rockbox on the S either yet.

The links to the gigabeatS manual on this page http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatSInstallation
are dead, does this "Work-inProgress" Manual exist?

The only differences in the Gigabeat S manual from any of our other manuals is going to be the keymap, and installation / uninstallation procedure - so you can probably substitute the Gigabeat F manual for most of this information.

However, there is a reason we do not list the Gigabeat S on the front page of www.rockbox.org yet - and that's because the port is NOT finished yet, and we do not provide ad hoc support for it yet. Please bear this in mind if you're going to do the installation anyway.
