M3 and rockbox problems
« on: July 01, 2008, 04:03:04 AM »
i finally decided to install rockbox on one of my cowon M3 players and it runs perfectly and is quite a lot of fun, but there are some slight issues.
1) when docked the M3 is not charged at all, it gets current but the battery doesn't get charged. i have to charge it with USB but this takes quite a while to complete. i think it takes about 8-10 hours to charge the M3 with USB in contrast to 2-3 hours when docked.

another thing that i found a bit strange is that the volume-wheel that also functions as scrolling wheel in the menu reacts inverted. normally i would scroll to the right to go down in the menu, but with rockbox it is the other way round. i looked inside the settings if there was something to change but didn't find anything.

any chances to get this fixed, especially the charging problem is quite a heavy one. i could live with the inverted scroll-wheel, it is only a matter of getting used to.

thanks and best regards, o.

Rockbox doesn't care what the Original Firmware does - here is a short quote from the IRC log on 29/06/2008 (amiconn is the developer who ported the M3):

Quote
22:46:49   amiconn   The buttons are mapped the way they should be in rockbox
22:49:58   lolmaus   "the way they should be in rockbox" -- it's always better when the way is for user's convenience, not programmer's concept
22:50:15   amiconn   It is for user's convenience...
22:52:07   amiconn   Vol+ goes up, Vol- goes down. And due to the position the rocker switch is located at it feels quite natural to have it that way. It's almost like spinning a scroll wheel

Caveat - I haven't actually used an M3, so I have no idea what it feels like.  I'm just pointing out that "The OF does it" is no reason at all to do something.

Yes, unfortunately the power management work isn't finished yet. But for the time being you can use a little trick to get it charging as fast as before, it's a bit inconvenient but better than waiting ages for the battery to charge from USB, I think.

Here it is:
  • Connect player to USB
  • Insert charger (USB still connected)
  • Then you can detach the USB cable again if you want to, the player will stay in the "Cowon loader" and charge normally.

yeah you are right. it is only that i have been using my M3 for years now and got used to it, so that i turn the button to the right, to scroll down. now it is the opposite.
but it is quite a fun to use rockbox and find "hidden" features :) today i discovered how to delete files. this was my biggest wish for the original firmware that never got finished though.

yeah thanks for that, will try this out.
not that i use the M3 regularly, it was laying around for several months unused because my ipod touch has replaced it more or less. but i always like to go back to the roots and i am quite happy with the M3 running rockbox now. i still wonder how long the battery will do it.

I just installed rockbox on my m3l, and am quite impressed. Quite a nice little piece of work. I think I might put it on my x5. Oluv already mentioned most of what I came here to say, about it not charging and the reversed volume scrolling.
But one other thing: Does anyone have any idea how to get out of doom on the thing? I brought up the menu, and then selected quit, but then something else came up that I couldn't read, and I couldn't get it to quit after that. Pressing any button just took it back to the game. I think I tried everything, even trying to power it off, which didn't work. I ended up having to get a paper clip and hit the reset hole to get it to quit. Any idea on what I was doing wrong?
