install on ipod video (w. replaced hard drive) - rockbox.ipod not found *SOLVED*

Hi. I'm having problems with reinstalling rockbox on my old repaired ipod. Yes, the file structure is definitely right, rockbox.ipod is exactly where it should be, but the bootloader stops on this screen:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: 2.0
IPOD version: 0xFFFFFFFF
TOSHIBA MK3008GAL
Partition 1: 0x0B 7130 MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to reboot
then SELECT+PLAY for disk mode

I have tried everything and am utterly baffled. I am suspecting that it might be to do with the hard drive I just fitted (Toshiba MK3008GAL) to replace the original that recently died. Can rockbox work on an ipod with replaced hard drive? or is it to do with the partitioning? 7130MB can't be right...

Would be so happy if anyone can help!

**EDIT**
I can't let a puzzle drop... Google took me to rockbox IRC log 20080515, where staen had the same problem as me - so I tried gevaerts' suggestion using dd and it worked! Thanks staen, gevaerts, amiconn et al. Hope a solution makes its way into current build.

Hi,

New hard drives usually get shipped unformatted, what did you do after installing the new drive? Did you use the restore functionality of Itunes (which would probably be the recommended way under Windows) or did you format it yourself (if you did it manually, what exact steps did you do). Does the Apple firmware still work fine?
What else have you already tried to make rockbox work?

Thanks for fast reply!

Yes, it did arrive unformatted - so first I formatted and initialised with iTunes 7 under Windows, did a manual install of rockbox under Ubuntu, and got this screen. I can't remember exactly what order I tried everything else in, but it includes uninstalling and reinstalling rockbox both from ubuntu and using the automatic installer under windows, reformatting and reinitialising the hard drive using windows explorer and the anapod reinitialiser (wondering if it might be some updated Apple firmware that might be the problem). Tried installing ipodlinux's ipodloader too, but failed because I couldn't find the right files to download. Throughout, ipod boots into the Apple firmware very happily, and keeps getting stuck on the same rockbox bootloader error! Like I say, baffled...

Llorean:
usually the error message means you didn't extract rockbox.zip properly.

tacet:
hmm, yep, but I did:
unzip rockbox.zip -d /media/ipod/

.rockbox/ is present in the root directory, and contains rockbox.ipod and everything else correctly.

I also tried using the automatic installer, which should (and did) get it right, no?

Thanks anyway.
