Question on Drag&drop/database
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:06:40 AM »
hey all im new to rockbox and i have to say its brilliant, the 5 band eq is just what i wanted out of my ipod. anyway ill just cut to the chase -

With rockbox when u drag and drop where do u exactly add the files so it will add to rockbox's music data base? or when u drag and drop files does this mean it only appears under FILES in the rockbox menu and not database. id like to get rid of this weird directory structure itunes/winamp creates but will this mean i wont have a music database?

anyway cheers,
                             MoRtY

P.S i know the questions are basic/stupid but i looked in the manual it wasnt specific enough and tried dragging, dropping and didnt add to database.

The database scans everywhere except in the .rockbox folder (because it has a file in it, database.ignore, that tells the database to ignore it).

Please, don't use "u" in our forums. We ask that you try to use proper English for the benefit of our non-native speakers.

ok thank you very much for the info. i seemed to have found the issue it seems that
the music database wasnt on "auto update" so it hadnt rescanned the folders.
Anyway i was wondering if i could completely remove the apple firmware, is this as
easy as deleting the ipod_control folder?, i would like it so winamp recognizes my
ipod as a standard mp3 player, is there a setting or something within rockbox or
if i just delete the ipod_control folder will that do the trick?

It's much more complicated than that, sadly. But even that wouldn't fix the problem because the USB mode itself is what helps identify it.

Until such time as Rockbox has its own USB mode, your iPod will always be an iPod to things on the other end of the USB cable.

i think thats just what rockbox needs, its own usb mode, that would be awesome :D
anyway ill hack away and see if i can get winamp to sync with normal directory structure, if
it can be done.

Do a forum search, there's lots of threads about the ipod file structure and about synching either to that structure (but not from iTunes) or, OTOH, avoiding that structure and synching to a 'normal' configuration.

ok, i didnt seem to find anything on this in your forum so this is a cool tip for those who dont know.

for those winamp fans out there, if you want to sync your music library to to your ipod with a normal file structure ie. music/artist/album/## - title.mp3, swing over to http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/ and download the ml_ipod plugin for winamp. Then, once installed, go to options, preferences, ipod support, transfers, upload tab,  and u will see an option, File system - Use custom filename formatting for tracks etc etc. Tick this option and type in ur prefered file structure, and u can basically have any file structure you want. Then sync your ipod. Now youll have all your ipod tracks in meaningful file names ready to use with rockbox and to copy back to your computer easily.

by the way if someone knows where to put the album art with the music/artist/album/title.mp3 structure let me know because i tried putting it under ipod_control/music and it doesnt show up in rockbox

For album art info see www.rockbox.org/wiki/AlbumArt

And please, for the second time, use proper English and not things like "u".  Thanks  :)
