SDHC cards with Sansa e200
(1/1)
madagascaradam:
My parents are going to be getting me a Micro SDHC cards for my birthday, but I'm only getting it a few days before leaving the country for a while and I may not have time to get on the internet first. So, I have a few questions about using the SDHC card with Rockbox once I get it. I read the stuff about needing a card reader to write files to it and some people saying they have no problems with plugging it into USB with the card in, etc.
But here are my questions:
When I add music files to the SDHC card, what should the directories look like? I have my music on the embedded memory in the "MUSIC" folder that it automatically sets up. Do I need to make another "MUSIC" folder on the SDHC drive?
I read that I can access the files altogether through the "Database" feature, but that they'd be separate if I'm looking in the "files" folder. So what I want to know is this: If I click on something like "artist" or "album" from the database menu and then click "all tracks", will that also include all tracks from the SDHC card? Specifically, when the player is set to random playback, will it randomly choose among songs in the standard internal memory and ALSO from the SDHC card?
Finally, how does creating playlists between the SDHC card and the internal memory work? Do I have to program all the playlists from within the Rockbox firmware or is there some way to set up the playlists on my computer and load them on to Rockbox? I haven't tried yet, but if I had to, could I create playlists for the MicroSDHC songs and separate playlists for the internal memory - meaning, create them first on my computer, then add them to the appropriate file folder (and what would that be)?
Thanks for the help! Hope this isn't too many questions!

Rockbox does not require any special sort of folders at all. If you *want* a folder called Music on your new SDHC card, by all means make one - but if you don't - Rockbox won't care.

Yes, when you access your music from the Database menu, all of it will be available when doing random play etc.

Playlists created from within Rockbox would be guaranteed to work all the time. If you create them on your PC, you might have to do some editting of the ones which feature music on the SDHC card, since the path that your PC sees the music at will be different from the path that Rockbox sees. Usually when people use playlists created on their PCs for a Rockbox'd DAP, the code in Rockbox which reads playlists manages to find the music despite this difference by clever trickery (I won't go into details), but I've seen reports of this not working for playlists of music held on SDHC cards and the like. This is because Rockbox accesses the content of these cards as a special "folder" in it's file listing, rather than by a different drive letter as you would see it on Windows.

Hope that helps.
