No, it's because these are technical support forums, not social forums and topics get locked when they stray too far off-topic.

ok. but no harm done. maybe they should be renamed Technical Forums as opposed to just Forums. Forum suggests to me an open place

They already say Technical Forums on all but the logo, and anyway the guidelines you agreed to read when you signed up (and even stated that you had read) clearly explain their function.

You aren't - I was trying to explain that the guidelines that you (as in everyone) agreed to explain the nature of the forums.  It was in response to this:

Locking a thread prevents further activity, making it skew search results less, and helping people note that the topic itself is "done" (either solved, or simply closed off as irrelevant).
