Help! A lot of my music is missing >_<
« on: June 18, 2008, 06:01:11 PM »
Well actually I have two problems. 1st, the OS started great but when it tried to build a database of my songs it looked like it went well but now when I go through my songs, a lot of them are randomly missing from the database. When I plug the ipod into the pc the data is all there(checked via itunes) but it seems to just not show up on the database. Which brings me to another issue, when I plug in the ipod, windows wants to install new hardware, Rockbox media player which it cannot find software for. I just ignored it and everything seems fine but I'm still wondering if I should be mindful of it.

Thanks for all the help guys and this is an AWESOME OS so far. Can't wait to show my friends.

1. check if the files are tagged correctly. If they are not they won't be sorted in the database -- Itunes puts tags into its own database file, not the file tags.
2. you need to use Apples disc mode as Rockbox' USB mode isn't finished yet. Please check the FAQ, this is mentioned there.

ok thanks. now another issue came up, when I try to build the database, it builds it, asks me to reboot and when I do reboot, it makes me do it again. Am I doing something wrong?

edit:also I really don't know what you mean by tags. The only tags I see are the 4 letter sequence that seems to be on each file in the music folder. They are all 4 letters so I don't know what's up with that.

Make sure that you are rebooting by shutting the iPod down by pressing and holding the Play/Pause button, and then turning it back on.    Do not do a hard reset (Menu & Select).

Tags are metadata that hold information about your song, like artist, album, title, etc.  Read this for more information:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_editor

yup I've done it both ways and each time, it trys to commit and shows 1/9, then doesn't go any further and then I have to repeat the process. I read another thread that had the same issue and it was never resolved. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and the same issue happens. This is truthfully frustrating...

Usually this happens when you have some problematic metadata in one (or more) of your files.  You can use a binary search technique to try to find the file(s).

Take from me, dont use Rockbox, that will give u nothing but problems. It will eventually ruin the mp3 player. If anything goes wrong with the mp3 player that will damage the mp3 player completely.
Try editing the File Tags it should work if you do that, or just take the songs that arent working in the ipod itself, and put them back into the Itunes it should pick up the files after that

What are you talking about?  Rockbox will not "eventually ruin the mp3 player."

It ruined my mp3 player, because my Iaudio X5L wasn't originally supposed to be used with Rockbox, and it voided my warranty

I seriously doubt that.

Voiding a warranty and breaking a player are two completely different things.  What exactly are you claiming here?

One one MP3 player he used the wrong charger with his mp3 player and fried the internal circuits.  To be polite, user error triumphs over Rockbox as the damaging factor here.

On the other he dropped it multiple times and some solder joints broke.  He seems to think that using Rockbox can magically cause solder joints to come undone.

In short, he is talking rubbish.  Rockbox cannot cause physical changes to your MP3 player.  It is like saying Windows on your home PC caused a power surge destroying your TV.  Impossible.
