What happens when you hold "Menu+Select", and when exactly do you press "Select+Play"?

when i do menu+select it just restarts the ipod and goes back to the screen.  i only do select+play whenever im done doing the menu+select
but yeah my computer doesnt even recognize that something is plugged in when i plug it in through the usb port.  it charges, but it does not even tell me that something is plugged into the computer.  on the other hand ive tried to plug in other things and they work. just not the ipod.

As soon as the iPod starts to restart (when the screen clears while holding Menu+Select) IMMEDIATELY hold down Select+Play.
