They should auto boost if required.

You can set the boost clock speed to whatever you want by changing the source, its software controlled.  Check the patch tracker, theres been more then a few patches posted over the years for adjusting the core clock speed.

Llorean:
You can't have it "maxed out". It's an On/Off thing. The CPU is Boosted (80mhz on iPods) or Unboosted (30mhz on iPods). There are no other speeds used except the "idle" speed for when nothing is happening at all.

To reach 80mhz you just need to increase it by one. No more. If you think it's faster if you add more than one, you're imagining things. It's placebo effect.
