H320 running CF card - problems
« on: June 12, 2008, 08:17:39 AM »
hi. i'm running RockBox, a very recent version (like a week old), with the custom H300 bootloader that cam be found on http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/CFModGuide

the adapter is the kind everybody has, the with a jumper i had to bend.

the card is Transcend 32gb 133x

generally it works. i can transfer music to and from the device, i can play. while playing, there aren't any problems. but sometimes on startup, i get the following errors:

1. totally randomly, but usually when player was off overnight/more than a few hours.
on boot, right after the "Batt: ..." line (that's line 3), it clears the screen and reports:
I03:AddrErr
at 003F2FD2

2. when attaching the USB cable to the turned-off device, again after the "Batt" line 3, "Bootloader USB mode" flashes for a fraction of a second and then clears the screen and reports:
I03:AddrErr
at 003F2B4E

in both cases, i have to reset the player, either by pressing "play", waiting it boots OF, waiting some more so it reports HDD error, then shut it down. or i can just use a safety pin to reset the player.

it's quite annoying actually, are there any other reports of this kind of problem?

I get similar errors with my Gigabeat F10 converted using the same kind of CF<->ATA adapter.
Usually a disk read error or file not found during boot.
Sometimes a reboot will work, sometimes I have to power cycle the battery (GB has a switch on the bottom for that), sometimes the flash gets corrupted and I have to re-install rockbox.
(I've sometimes needed to use the windows scandisk on the mounted GB as a USB disk to be able to re-install Rockbox.  I haven't lost any music files though).
I'm using the A-Data 16gb cf in the GB.

hmm... so how do you see this:
1. CF card fault
2. CF-ATA adapter fault
3. player hardware fault (iRiver)
4. RockBox software fault

anyone fixed these errors yet?

I have an H320 modded with a 32GB 233x RiDATA card. Same adapter, same bootloader, and I've not had any problems, across a wide variety of Rockbox versions (currently running r17705).

Given the very different sets of hardware you're using, it's hard to see where the problem might be. Poor quality control on the adapter, maybe? It might be worth trying another CF card (it only needs to be big enough to fit Rockbox and some sample music on, so there's no need to break the bank), and seeing if you get the same issues.

I recently did the CF mod on an iriver H320, using a Transcend 8 GB 133x card.  So far no problems whatsoever.  I did use a different adapter than most seem to be using.  Most are using the one linked to on the CFModGuide page in the TWiki, with the link labelled "Here is one example."  I am using the other one, with the link labelled "This product."  The second one is made by Ably-Tech, a firm in Taiwan http://www.ably.com.tw/main.htm.  The link in the Wiki is to a UK retailer, who sells it for about $18 US plus shipping.  I found a US retailer, http://www.ameri-rack.com/APA-CF18T_m.html, who sells it for about $24 US plus shipping.  There are some detailed photos on the Ably-Tech and Ameri-Rack web sites.

I went with the Ably-Tech model PA-CF18T adapter because it is more compact, fitting in the hard drive space more precisely (54x34x4mm WxLxD, vs 56x48x7mm, while the hard drive is 54x78.5.5mm).  In particular, you don't have to bend over the jumper so it doesn't poke the battery, nor trim off some ears so the hard drive pins can seat all the way into the adaptor.

There is another difference, that some of the hardware experts might know the meaning of, because I sure don't.  The jumper has three settings: master, slave, and "USE_HDD_JP."  (See the photos on either of the links above.)  I set my jumper on this third setting.

I know what master and slave settings are for, but I can only speculate about why "USE_HDD_JP" might be different from master.  Cranking my speculator up to level 10, might this setting provide compatibility for some targets that the other adaptor does not?

I did experiment with jumper settings and an old build (Sept. 2007) of Rockbox that includes the Recording Enhancement Pack.  No dice.  None of the jumper settings could take the place of the code changes that the developers made to the current build to enable the CF mod.

You are, in fact, probably hit by a bug in the current svn bootloader. I have this issue on my h340 with 80GB disk. The plan is to have a debug session during devcon next week.

So this is not CF related at all....

I just did the CF Mod today, and have similar problems like kokoon...

I use the modified Bootloader from http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/CFModGuide, a 16GB 133x CF card from Transcend and the following CF to IDE adapter: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10886.

When I try to start Rockbox, I always get the following error code:
I03: AddrErr
at 003F35DA

But my H320 is booting properly when I connect the turned off player to USB and then disconnect it.
I have tried several builds with always the same result.

Does anyone have a hint what I could try to resolve that problem?

Thank you!

hey FLN.
i spoke to petur last week and he told me it's a known bug in the bootloader and that it's still not fixed. supposed to be some timing issue. he also told me who's the guy working on that but i forgot.

so... your version of the problem seems a bit more awkward than mine, too bad. i mean, i can live with mine, i just have to reboot it sometimes. you going to investigate?

hi kokoon,

thanks for your reply. I just found out that it could take up to 6 or 7 resets to start my player. At first I didn't try that often. It seems that it needs more resets after charging or connecting it via USB.

I used a 32G Transcend 133x on my H320 using the bootloader posted on the CFModGuide http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/pub/Main/CFModGuide/H300.zip

and this CF adapter (jumper set to master)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10886

The id code I see at boot time is
id[00]=044A
id[82]=7009
id[83]=400C

It works well without the booting issue, guess I am lucky. However original firmware is no longer working.

Hi all,

After learning that the HDD in my h320 doesn't like being bounced I decided to try the CF mod. I've used a Transcend 32Gb 400x CF card (going cheap on Amazon) with a StarTech.com enclosure . Set to be master. IRiver firmware opens ok (has the usual check HDD connection messages that everyone else reports), and I can see the CF card via USB connection to my PC.

However, I'm getting the ATA error: -80 message.
Not sure what to do next  - any advice would be appreciated!

Hi all!

Could someone describe all the actions needed for Iriver H320 CFMod step by step?
I cannot get it clear from Wiki page...

1. What should I do with this file http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/pub/Main/CFModGuide/H300.zip??? I see there's just a .hex file in the archive.
Should I run firmware update from inside the original Iriver firmware on this file? Or choose it in Rockbox utility when installing the Rockbox?
2. For Iriver IHP-100 there is a large detailed bootloader install procedure, and what I see for H300 is a few words with this hex file and with no other stuff like it is with IHP-100
3. What are further steps?
4. What format CF card should have?

It would be so great if someone who succeeded in this stuff helped me with description of each step he made in details.
Thanks a lot in advance!
