Battery problem ipod video how to turn off from rockbox without rebooting
« on: June 11, 2008, 01:13:24 AM »
Well there have been other reports about battery life going down with rockbox (but none have answered my question) and it has happened to me since i got rockbox.
I have a 30 gig ipod video and maybe the problem is when i reboot the battery goes down a lot so i was wondering if there is a way to  turn off ipod from rockbox like in the normal apple firmware where u just left menu pressed. If this is impossible is there at least a way to get to the loader menu and turn it off from there without having to reboot ipod.

Rebooting might not be the problem because when I'm trying to hear music the battery lasts for about 1 hour and it goes down dramatically.

Help please anyone have a solution? ???

You turn of a Rockbox'd iPod the same way you turn off an iPod which doesn't have Rockbox on it, i.e. by holding down the "Play" button.

The state they end up in is different though, the Rockbox'd iPod would actually be off, while Apple's firmware just puts the iPod into a "sleep" state. We prefer our method, it saves battery.

Alright it worked thanks. Let´s just see if it solved the battery life going down problem.

Thanks a lot. 8) ;D

EDIT: The problem continues. I went to rockbox and checked the battery and it was at 81% and told me it would last 9h and like 30mins so I turned it off the right way (thanks to GodEater) and went to the Apple OS firmware to watch movies (im having problems with movies on rockbox) and the battery lasted for about 40mins instead of 9h and 30mins.

Any ideas?

1) Rockbox does not play the same format of videos that the Apple firmware does.  Check the PluginMpegplayer page in the wiki.

2) You aren't making a direct comparison so I'm not sure what reporting Rockbox's runtime estimate (which is known not to be terribly accurate) and then saying how long it took for the OF to run down the battery while playing videos is supposed to tell me.

Firstly, as Chronon says, Rockbox's estimate of remaining battery life is based on using Rockbox, not the original firmware.

Secondly, that estimate is based on playback of music, where the backlight is powered off. Watching a movie requires that the iPod has it's backlight turned on all the time - this will absolutely SLAY the battery life.

well I'll try to store my energy as most i can and try it out but i think maybe i have to change the battery because if an ipod video is fully charged you should be able to see a lot of movies. that's kind of what a video is for. I uninstalled rockbox in the meantime and i will reinstall once i fix it.

I shall refer you to this page on Apple's own website : http://support.apple.com/kb/SP26

Note where it says "up to 3.5 hours of video playback".

This is with a brand spanking new battery in tip-top condition, that is fully charged. I hope the point is clear.

That's also using the Broadcom video accelerator, which is probably more efficient at video decoding than the CPU.

This seems to be drifting off topic for these forums.  Battery life when using the OF is not Rockbox related, unless someone can demonstrate that Rockbox is changing how the OF behaves.  But I can't identify a mechanism that would lead to such an outcome.   Without a clear demonstration that this is happening I don't think there's any reason to consider the behavior of the OF to be Rockbox related.

iRorro, if you're concerned that about the battery life in Rockbox you can run a battery benchmark.  See PluginBatteryBenchmark.
