seriously I mean when you come to a restaurant are you the one that is suppose to cook or is it the cook himself!!!.

How many volunteer cooks do you know?  And would you complain if you didn't like the free food they offered you?

Not everyone can cook a hamburger without burning it either. They're both knowledge skills with minimal physical requirements. With encryption breaking, it requires an input/output stream with a computer. With cooking for a picnic it requires the means to manipulate the meat, and an apparatus for cooking said meat.

He picked the cooking metaphor, my point was merely "it's not our job, nobody gives us a paycheck to work on Rockbox." If he's dedicated and interested enough, he can learn the necessary skills. But saying "I can't be bothered to spend the time, it is the obligation of those who have the skills to use them for me" is silly. By that logic, I should be able to go up to anyone who's worked for Habitat for Humanity and tell them they should build me a house, because they've volunteered to do it in the past.

The "I can't be bothered" and "it is the obligation of others" points are separate.  Telling a user to get cracking on a port isn't going to be very productive when you pretty well know that he has no experience in programming.

Cooking is a general life skill.  By the time you get to the park, you already know how to cook.  Not everyone has the interest to learn how to program.

Locked, I believe the original question has been answered - we don't need to debate this in the install forum, do we?

EDIT:  Ok, NOT locked - just stay on subject - I trust everyone's better judgment not to take this further off-topic in the name of getting in the last word.

Pretty sure that wasn't meant to be taken literally as a command to go out and port rockbox, and rather that the link to the NewPorts page was meant to underscore just how difficult the work is and explain why no one has been able to do it so far.

Yeah I figured, but I've seen a few instances of this, and they don't seem to take it that way, since they always reply in the manner of "What?? Me? I can't do THAT!"

Considering the sentence prior to it, I took busta5000's comment about who's supposed to be cooking at the restaurant as simply talking about skills.

I personally find it hard to read as just about knowledge when he's made it clear he thinks we're professionals at this, when nobody is being paid to do it, and he's not talking about who knows how to do a task, but in his own words, who's "suppose[d]" to do a task in a given situation.

Especially given that you yourself mentioned you consider cooking a basic life skill, in which case at a restaurant both the customer and the cook are able to perform the task (have the knowledge) so it's only a matter of "whose job is it" rather than "who knows how" in his analogy. Given that, what about his statement said "people at a restaurant don't know how to cook" (which would be pretty much necessary were it merely about knowledge)?

But I really think the key point is the idea of who's supposed to do it. Just having superior knowledge of a matter never means you're supposed to be the one who makes use of that knowledge merely because others want to benefit from it.

On the other hand, nobody's saying *he's* supposed to do it. The point was that the only way to guarantee it gets done is to be the one who does it.

Yeah I figured,

Then you should not have said otherwise.

As far as I know, "professional" doesn't always mean "someone getting paid", it can just mean "an expert" i.e. one that does something "at a professional level".

The cook is (presumably) much better at cooking.

Of course not.

Alrighty then.

I guess I forgave the supposing of the cook since I thought it was just a follow-on from the previous sentence, and a bad example.

@ saratoga: well, I wasn't completely sure.

I am going to lock this again, as it has got even more pointless.  I would suggest some people ought to check a dictionary for the definition of "analogy"
