Formatted 16MB-Recovery Drive, Please Help!!!
« on: June 05, 2008, 03:01:11 AM »
well..
i'll tel u my prob in detail

i had 01.02.18A firmware on my sansa e260 (not r series, ita a V1) and then i installed rockbox on it.. i was enjoyin rockbox, and one day my cousin wanted me to showhow to install rockbox, so i remover rockbox(by using sansapacher)
then i also wanted himto show how to upgrade the original firmware manually in recovery mode. so i went to the recovery mode but then i did a stupid thing and formatted my 16mb-format disk, the disk did not format successfully for the first attempt and so i did it again and succesfully completed it when i now looked at my sansa's screen i saw
LUN0 locked
LUN0 unlocked
these messages appeared repeatedly
and when i disconnected the sansa and it froze.
i forced it to power off by holding the menu button for 15 sec and when i booted it again it flashed the sansa screen and gave the error
Load main image failed
Switch to Recovrey mode

now when i went to recovery mode i got a 16MB-FORMAT drive detected on my system with just a curroupted VERSION.TXT file in it
i copied the mi4 file to reinstall the firmware (i tried both firmware.mi4 and PP5022.mi4 with and without the bootloader which also itried in 2 names pribootLoader.rom and BL_SD_BOARDSUPPORT.rom, i have tried all combinations)
but when i wite these files on the 16MB drive i see
LUN0 locked
LUN0 unlocked thing repeating on my sansa screen
and it does not display anthing else
it does not commit the firmware and when i plug it out it displays the disconnected message and freezes
i tried this a number of times in around 4 systems
nothing works
no matter what i put on the 16Mb drive it freezes on disconnecting and when i again connect it to the PC the drive contains only a curroupted version.txt file and nothing else

the VERSION.TXT file containes this

Version Info: Product Rev.: ÿÿÿÿÿ ...removed for clarity... ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ2 œ„_þÿ°Bé|
Base Code: ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

i then tried the e200tool in linux
and was able to complete succesfullt the procedure as mentioned in chrisjs's website
http://chrisjs.com/howto-e200r-to-e200/

but after doing this the when the sansa exectutes and comes to the recovery drive it just contains the curroupted version.txt and like before it does not commit any firmware and still freezes on disconnection

please help....... please please please
i don mind having only rockbox and not the sansa original firmware

EDIT by bascule: shortened the super-wide line ;)

I think you need two files to flash firmware and on some sites it even tells you three or four.
The two files I use are

firmware.mi4

and

pribootLoader.rom

Do not follow random guides on random sites that we cannot possibly control and are frequently wrong.

Are you sure you did this?  I believe if you format the 16MB drive you lose recovery mode, so if you can get into it . . .

Do this exactly and you should be good to go.

This also solves the two drives "can't access drives problem. It sort of repeats some of the "unbrick a sansa" instructions, but it was simpler for a non-techie like me to understand.

This procedure works with Linux or Windows with a Sansa e280 with hardware revision 1. it should work with any v.1 e200 series. All songs on the Sansa will be lost!

First step: Power off the unit by pressing the On/Off Button (may take up to 30 seconds).

Second step: Put the sansa into recovery mode. Put the HOLD-slider into the hold position (orange). Continue pressing the REC button while pressing once the ON/OFF button. The player goes into "Recovery Mode" (this procedure somehow dosn't work with firmware 01.03.01 and 01.03.07).Connect the player via USB cable to the computer. A 16 MB partition appears similar to a 16 MB USB stick.

Third step: Download  firmware from one of the links here in Rockbox (beware of firmware 01.03.07 - the MSC USB setting is gone!)

Unpack the zip file and additionally create a empty textfile named "sansa.fmt". Rename the file "BL SD_ boardSupportSD.rom" to "pribootLoader.rom". Rename the file "PP5022.mi4" to "firmware.mi4".

Move the three files "sansa.fint", "pribootLoader.rom" and "firmware.mi4" into the 16 MB partition which appeared beforehand.

Now eject the player safely by "unmounting" (Linux) or "safely removing hardware" (Windows).
Fourth step: After ejecting/unmounting/removing the hardware safely unplug the Sansa from the computer. Now it is formatting and this takes a while. Now put the HOLD switch back to normal (not orange).

Fifth step: The sansa e28XX boots normally and asks for the default language. All songs are gone but it works again.

Problems: may occur if not using the right firmware. Repeat the procedure with a firmware which is suitable.

If the problem persists there is hope as there is a great tool for linux called e200tool which helps restoring functionality when other procedures fail.
