Try following the instructions on the IpodManualRestore wiki page first.

Yes, ipodpatcher allows you to write a complete Rockbox.ipod into the firmware partition of the ipod instead of the usual bootloader .ipod file. This removes the ability to run the AppleOS at all, and means booting up is even faster usually.

The downside is you have to manually write this .ipod file with ipodpatcher whenever you choose to upgrade rockbox, since simply unzipping won't acheive this for you.

Yes use a fat32 formatter or I believe hp have one, you can't use windows format disk is too big.

There is also a command line option if you use ipodpatcher. I'm afraid these are all windows tools.

I believe you can do it directly on Linux but suggest you search the forrums and the rockbox site.

I think its better just to format the partion thus leaving the Apple firmware intact.
do note you will, under both sysetms have  no Apple OS.

The mtools suite on linux is perfectly capable of formatting a fat32 drive to the size required by kulrich. There's no need for him to go back to windows to do this. The page which Llorean originall referred him to contains all the appropriate instructions for the formatting part of the operation.

ipodpatcher cannot do this on it's own currently.

I have no idea what you're saying here.

thanx,

I don't find my  ipod in the list of MBR's.
see http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodConversionToFAT32#b_Download_the_partition_table_f

It is an  40Gb Photo 4G. Which MBR can I use instead.
