nano 2gig boot & battery issue
«

Hi guys....
my gen1 2gig nano is doing some strange things....
with the usb cable connected, when booting into ipod software, it reports a full battery. When booting into disk mode, again a full battery is reported.
in disk mode, remove the usb cable and the ipod beeps and reports that the battery is flat and refuses to start when trying to get into rockbox OS.
boot into ipod OS with cable connected, remove cable and its fine. Ipod software runs... if it was a flat battery, this wouldn't be the case... !!
any ideas ?

This isn't an (un)installation question is it?
Does this happen every time you try to start Rockbox? You make it sound as though it will only boot into the Apple firmware if the cable is connected. Is that the case?

Thank you for the reply.... Sorry, no, this isn't an install question as such... however I have reinstalled to try and fix the issue. I'm thinking its just a battery issue, however item 6 makes me wonder... ?
I'll try to be more specific.
1. When trying to boot ipod in to RB or AppleOS by pressing the menu button, with
no
external power supply nothing happens.
2. When resetting using menu&select with no external power, low battery icon is displayed, backlight does not come on, unit turns off after low battery message.
3. When plugging in external power either from usb or wall (without pressing keys) nothing happens.
4. Booting Rockbox USB connection : When resetting using menu&select when
connected to usb
apple logo appears, rockbox starts to boot, however hangs for 120+ seconds on rockbox boot screen showing version number : r17679-080602. Rockbox then loads, displays top level menu. Key pad does not appear to scroll menu, however backlight comes on at each touch... hangs for 60+ seconds then boots into usb mode. Battery level is shown as full. Unplug usb and Ipod gives low battery messgae and turns off.
5. Booting Rockbox Wall charger : When resetting using menu&select when
connected to wall charger
apple logo appears, rockbox starts to boot, however hangs on rockbox boot screen showing version number : r17679-080602. Rockbox takes 5 minutes to load. Runs very slowly, scroll very unresponsive, takes 60 seconds to scroll down the menu. Key pad does activates backlight at each touch... backlight fades out. Under system information, battery shows as 0%. Unplug and Ipod gives low battery message and turns off.
6. Booting Apple OS : When resetting using menu&select when
connected
to usb or external power apple logo appears, slide hold, Apple OS boots, battery shows full. Disconnect external power, Apple OS works as expected. Unit does not shut off or display battery warning. Backlight is bright, no apparent issues... !!
7. Put unit to sleep within Apple OS by pressing play for a few seconds, unit shuts off and to restart we follow the workflow starting at 1 above.
8. I've recharged overnight within the Apple OS and this morning a full battery was reported.
9. In case this was an issue with a corrupt file. The unit has been formatted and rockbox reinstalled with the latest build and the rockbox utility.
Cheers

It sounds like there's some possible communication issues with the charging circuit. I don't have too much time today. But these extra details should give some clues as to what might be wrong. I'll post back later today with my thoughts.

I have had similar issues with my 2gb 1gen nano. If I went for several days without charging, the ipod would not respond until I rebooted with the USB cable disconnected. After the reboot everything would go back to normal. This worked fine until a few months ago when the ipod would no longer reboot. I replaced the battery, which worked fine for the past few months, but the problem has repeated itself again today. I am currently running version r16414-080225.

same issue as eifel with my 30gb video, it goes into flat recharge, then boots into rockbox. After it is in rockbox I have tried to update the software, but it gets part of the way, cannot find a directory, and the ipod returns to the flat battery charge screen. when it is in the flat recharge state it can not find "mouse point."
this started happenning when I uninstalled itunes, I have also deleted the ipod os, except for the boot part.

eifel, did you hold Menu when inserting the cable as instructed in the manual?
vereint, are you sure about "mouse point"? I'm not familiar with that message. Are you saying that you have trouble updating to a newer build of Rockbox? You say that you deleted the Apple firmware. Does the iPod enter Disk Mode automatically when you plug in the USB cable or do you have to do it manually?

Wow, that took a second, but I think the message is referring to the "mount point". Blurry vision comes in handy sometimes.

yea mount point, sorry, real life happened and I was in a rush. half the time it is not recognized anymore, only when the rockbox is booted for a few seconds until I try to access it.
under the "stop a Hardware device" screen I has a USB Mass Storage Device, a Generic volume - (E:) [the drive the ipod is connected to] and a SAMSUNG HS030GA USB Device
only the ipod is connected to my usb ports
also I am not holding menu when connecting, and it is not going into the usual connected state, it displays the main menu screen and I can not move the curser (selection) away from archive
I just downloaded a 3rd party ipod charger ("icharge") software and it says it is at 21, but nothing is reading on the rockbox

You've mentioned how AppleOS shows a full battery, and even full backlight brightness.
This is good information.
The one thing you left out is "how long".
How long have you played in the Apple firmware? Have you attempted to play any music in the Apple firmware?

racekites: I'm assuming that this behavior is new. . . did this behavior begin to exhibit itself randomly or did it happen after some identifiable action?
vereint, do you have problems if you manually boot into Disk Mode before plugging in the cable?

Hey guys....
this issue went away, however is automagically back again after all this time !!
Rockbox has been working perfectly fine, however the battery was drained very low and the same issues are back, very very slow rockbox functionality, however no issues at all within the apple firmware.
I've restored to apple and then installed rockbox several times, however its just the same.... very very slow and at times unresponsive....
it takes 10+ minutes to boot into the rockbox firmware and navigating the menu's are incredibly slow.....
last time this happened, I left it on charge for a few days and the issues magically disappeared.
I can boot into apple firmware as normal and the battery is full.
The battery in rockbox is reported to be empty, rockbox doesn't even know the time.... once booted rockbox flashes up that the battery is empty, needs charging and that it is going to shut down.
very strange indeed !!??!!
