Back in Black theme
« on: June 02, 2008, 01:43:56 AM »
Hey everybody,

Just got finished making a new theme and I thought I'd share it.
It's loosely based on the Slick - Let It Blue theme.

I wanted 200x200 album art and a darker theme, but nothing was quite what I wanted.

I included some pics and the zip (change from .bin to .zip)

I was going to submit this to the wiki, but I didn't want to register, then jump on IRC and wait for somebody to give me wiki write access, and then finally edit the wiki and include my theme.

Seemed like a lot of hassle to submit a couple images and some txt files.

And why does my wiki name have to be a full first and last name?

Anyway,

If anyone wants to put it up on the wiki, go for it.

Also if anybody wants to change anything in the theme, again go for it.

I don't really like the font that included, but it is the best size for my Ipod.
I've tried all the fonts in the font bundle so if anyone knows of a better one, let me know.

I've loved rockbox ever since my Archos Jukebox 20, so I hope someone will enjoy my small contribution.

Even if it is a half-assed contribution at best

So, because you didn't want to do things the right way you decided to ignore the forum guidelines? Thanks all the same, but that's not really a choice you get to make. If you don't want to post it on the wiki, then that's your choice.

Honestly, it's less than three minutes of your time to contribute to the wiki, with the longest step (which is the only reason it might take longer) being "wait in IRC" if nobody's awake at the time. If you don't want to contribute to the wiki, that's fine, but please, at least have the decency to respect the rest of the guidelines around here.

So it's done.
I went through all the un-user friendly steps and posted it to the wiki.

Here's the link
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/pub/Main/WpsIpod5g/Back_in_Black_theme.zip

Seriously, I probably won't do this again.
I though I was doing something fun, and only wanted to post the theme here because someone asked me for it.

But after being scolded for "breaking the rules" in the forum and then jumping through all the weird hoops just to get it uploaded to the "correct place" in the "correct way" it's really ruined the whole "fun" thing for me.

Again if anybody has any suggestions for the theme feel free to do what you want with it.

Seriously though, what did you expect someone to say "Oh, we just put the guidelines up for fun, and don't mind that you chose to ignore them?"

I mean I can with some assurance say it's quite easy to avoid getting scolded for this issue. But you even went out of your way to rename the files to get past the restrictions, and admitted you knew where they were supposed to go.

Couldn't you have perhaps said "The WPS gallery is difficult for me, can someone help me post my theme?" as a way of solving your problem within the guidelines, rather than by your actions telling us you don't respect us, as a site, enough to follow them?

It's a shame you couldn't be bothered to include a screen cap on the wiki, so that people can decide if they want to use it.

he put screendumps on the wiki, but he forgot to specify their size, so you don't see a spacer until the pics load. He also didn't realize that the 5g wps wiki page is in alphabetical order..

.. and he violated the license under which I released the slick themes..

Again, I only posted this theme because a couple people I know saw my ipod and asked me about it.
These people have an ipods and had never heard of rockbox.

So it made sense to bring them here so they could see what rockbox was all about.

If I screwed up the formatting of the wiki posting, I'm sorry, but I'd never edited a wiki before.
I just copied the post above mine and changed the values until it worked.
I'm sure someone else with some experience could fix it and do a better job.

I would have much rather posted zip file here and have someone else edit and post it to the wiki properly, but alas that is "against the rules".

Some kind of automated form would make sense also.

Zinc, sorry but I only used your theme as a template to get what I wanted.
I liked the font you used and used trial and error to move stuff around so I could get the AA to fit.
Somewhere along the way I must have deleted the license entries , not my intention.
Feel free to fix it and re-post it if you like.

Lastly I just want to say that I understand why you guys have rules here.
They are needed.

But really this project is all about "breaking the rules".
If you hate the software on your player, you can load rockbox and make it do what you want.

It really sucked that all I wanted to do is contribute something, and get some people I know interested in rockbox.
But when I tried to do this I was immediately stomped on for "breaking rules".
When I thought I was helping everyone "break the rules".

DuhhOne, everyone makes mistakes from time to time.  Don't take it too hard.  From the standpoint of the project we just want to make sure that the resources remain usable by everyone.  That is a motivation for some of the rules.

I see Rockbox as allowing me to use a device that I own in a way that I want.  It does not involve disrespecting other people's intellectual property or copyright.  While themes are not part of the core project, I think that most would agree that they should adhere to a similar standard.  The goal, as I see it, is to make use of resources that permit and encourage reuse, not to make illicit use of copyrighted work.

Hopefully you can take the criticisms constructively.  Welcome to Rockbox.
