Rockbox dir-based playback + iTunes DB (for car integration usage)
« on: June 01, 2008, 08:33:28 PM »
Couldn't find what I was after (read: couldn't find a solid answer) with a search here or on Google, so figured I'd pose this scenario, and see if anyone has any suggestions (not that it's necessarily a rockbox firmware issue, but more of a usage scenario -- that last statement alone may cause most of you to tell me to look elsewhere, so we'll see -- hopefully you'll go easy on me)..

With my rockboxed ipod mini (or any rockboxed ipod, actually), would it be possible to do the following:

a.) While in Rockbox firmware use as normal, e.g., directory browsing and playback..
b.) While in Apple firmware have the iTunes DB be built upon/use/comprised of the music in my specific directory structure (the same one i use when in Rockbox firmware). The reason for wanting to do this is because my ipod integration kit for my car (much like ALL of them I would suspect) can only read/use the iTunes DB on an Ipod.

As one fellow on #rockbox said, this may not be possible due to Apple's file/dir structure requirements to keep the iTunes DB relatively small/performance enhanced. I would hope this isn't the case, so that is why I'm posting here.

I appreciate your reading this lengthy question/post. I LOVE rockbox and really only want to have to be in Apple firmware when having the ipod plugged up to my car.

EDIT: that same fellow on #rockbox suggested using the rockbox db in conjunction with the itunes db; in other words, have the rockbox db compile its database from the funky apple-required file/folder structure. seems like this should work. thoughts?

Without doubling up your files so that you have one copy in the iTunes format and one in regular-person format, I think you're only solution is to tag all of your files properly and use the Rockbox Database.
