Wanted: stable iPod 5G build
« on: May 31, 2008, 01:09:06 AM »
Hello everyone.  I love the project and it has caused me to have a bit of a DAP buying habit.  I also turned my cousin on to Rockbox and recommended that he consider the iPod 5G since it can be Rockboxed.  However, of all the targets I own, I use my iPod 5G the least because the builds have been very unstable for a long time.  I'd like to get a stable build for him since he's not very technically inclined and a lot of lockups can be pretty annoying.  Basically I just want no lockups and stable playback.  Does anyone know a very stable build for the iPod 5G?

We generally recommend the latest build.  Its fairly rare that older builds are more stable.

I am very diligent with updating to the latest build.  But often times there are new bugs introduced that don't get fixed for a while.  So I've seen several times that an older build is more stable the the latest, especially with my iPod 5G 80GB.  The latest builds render it mostly useless for the first 5 minutes after booting up.  My cousin has a 5G 30GB so there aren't the same issues as with the 80GB, but even still he is getting lockups very often.

We have no recent bug reports on random lockups. If you're getting lockups, why haven't you documented it?

Hi guys. I am completely new to Rock Box. I have been reading about it off and on for months but was always afraid to take the plunge... til now :) I LOVE IT!!! and want to start recommending it right away!

I have installed Rock Box on my 5g Ipod and would like to report a few "bugs"

1. Lock up whenever I go into Plugins>Games>Doom.
2. Lock up whenever I go into Recording. ( I really have no use for this feature on a 5g so I am wishing for instructions on how to remove it from the menus It is right under "Now Playing" and can be mistakenly clicked.
On that Note, I wish "Now Playing" was the default screen... and always was returned to after each setting screen. (make sense?)

Some of the themes do not load up correctly as shown in screen shots on the site, but Im sure this is a configuration setting I just have not found yet.
I have a lot to learn about Rock Box.. so I hesitate to complain about anything. My own ignorance may be to blame.

Thanks for such a kick @SS piece of software!!

No, doesn't make sense. If you want to change multiple values it would be really annoying if after changing a value you'd end up in the wps again. You can always press "play" to return to the wps.

For themes not loading correctly this is mostly to the themes being broken -- the parser has become stricter quite a while ago, and there are still themes around that haven't been adjusted. Another possibility is that the theme you're referring to requires a modified build.

Thanks blue, as I said I have alot to learn. for instance I just learned last night about the way you can still boot up Ipod firmware, and now you have explained how I can get back to wps. thanks.

Told ya my own ignorance would be an issue ;)

You're aware that our fine manual holds quite a lot of hints and explanations? ;) I can highly recommend it.

Err, nevermind what I said.

@ Elias ... i just started using Rockbox real recently myself so i aint no expert but does your ipod still act up with the original firmware? , cause if it does odds are it's the hardware that could just be messed up and not rockbox.

if possible did you try it on another friends ipod?

or even did u clean install rockbox or install it over the top of a older build? ... cause i aint sure if it matters with rockbox but in general on stuff like XBMC (XBox Media Center for XBox1 console) everytime you update to newest version it's recommended to clean install it (i.e. delete the entire .rockbox folder and transfer in the new build) as this way everything is 'fresh'.

did you try any of that stuff... if not, i would give it a shot and see what happens ;)

I installed the latest build as of several weeks ago on my 5G. "Stable" is in the eyes of the beholder but my Ipod has yet to lock up.  I have several themes installed and use Bookmarks quite a bit - nothing fancy.

I was wrong actually (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=17193.0), there was something broken in my rockbox install. I deleted it completelly and reinstalled from the utility, and now it is very stable again.

Actually not. I got another freeze yesterday. You can follow the story on my topic, but the strange thing is that I got the freeze only after I disabled the repeat in the settings. So I enabled it again and Ive been listening only to huge songs since then, to see if it still happens. So far, so good.
